Ukraine Says Russia Violates Energy Truce Amid Deadly Strikes (Worthy News Radio)

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Europe Bureau Chief

KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Ukraine has accused Russia of violating a proposed ceasefire covering energy infrastructure, just a day after U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced that Moscow and Kyiv had agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy facilities. The allegations came amid renewed Russian strikes that reportedly killed several people, raising fresh concerns about prospects for peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces struck at least six energy facilities on Monday, raising doubts about whether a truce can be implemented.

President Trump insisted Ukraine and Russia had agreed to his proposed ceasefire, while criticizing Zelenskyy for attacking Russian refineries producing diesel fuel.

“We told them, ‘Do whatever you want, but don’t hit the diesel fuel because there’s a big problem, a big shortage.’ And what does he do? He goes and hits the diesel fuel. He can do whatever he wants, but you can’t do that because we have a world problem,” Trump told reporters.

RENEWED SUFFERING

Moscow had not publicly confirmed a mutual ceasefire, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that Russia intends to continue its military campaign.

The dispute comes as Ukraine prepares for another harsh winter, with its electricity network already severely damaged by years of Russian bombardment.

There was more suffering in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, where a Russian missile attack reportedly killed at least three people and injured 11 others, including an emergency rescuer.

RELATIONS WITH HUNGARY

Despite the continuing fighting, there was some hope for improved relations between Ukraine and neighboring Hungary.

President Zelenskyy has signed legislation addressing minority-language education, potentially easing a longstanding dispute over the rights of ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine’s western Transcarpathia region.

The move could help overcome Hungarian objections to advancing Ukraine’s European Union membership negotiations.

PRESSURE ON RUSSIA

As Ukraine seeks closer ties with Brussels, the European Union has expanded sanctions against Russia, adding some 1,569 individuals and entities to its sanctions list.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says continued pressure on Moscow remains essential to meaningful peace negotiations.

However, with attacks continuing and no mutually confirmed energy ceasefire, hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough remain uncertain as the war, Europe’s deadliest conflict since the Second World War, continues to claim lives and devastate communities.
