Thousands Protest in Turkey as Erdogan Government Intensifies Crackdown on Independent Media

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Istanbul and Ankara on Saturday, denouncing an escalating crackdown on independent journalism under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as authorities continue arresting reporters, shutting down news organizations, and restricting access to critical media outlets.

At least 3,000 demonstrators gathered in each city on October 24, according to police estimates. Journalists, opposition representatives, and human rights activists demanded an end to censorship and the release of imprisoned reporters.

The Turkish Journalists’ Union reported that 11 journalists have been jailed over the past two months, while several independent media organizations have been shut down.

Earlier this month, Turkish authorities raided Halk TV, one of the country’s most prominent opposition broadcasters, suspended its programming, and installed a government-appointed administrator. Prosecutors cited allegations of bribery, bid rigging, and money laundering involving the station’s owner, while press freedom advocates condemned the takeover as politically motivated.

Authorities also blocked the website and social media accounts of independent news outlet T24, citing alleged LGBT-related content.

Press Freedom Under Growing Pressure

The Committee to Protect Journalists warned on October 12 that Turkey’s restrictions on independent journalism were approaching a crisis point, reporting that at least 22 journalists had been arrested or detained under the country’s disinformation law during 2026.

Turkey ranked 163rd out of 180 countries and territories in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, reflecting longstanding concerns about government interference in the media.

Restrictions have intensified since the failed military coup of 2016, when Erdogan’s government launched sweeping security operations that also affected journalists, academics, and political opponents.

The Turkish government maintains that journalists are not prosecuted for legitimate reporting and that legal actions concern criminal offenses rather than press freedom.

However, demonstrators argue that the expanding restrictions threaten the public’s access to independent information.

The protests also highlight broader concerns about democratic freedoms in Turkey, a NATO member whose government has faced international criticism over its treatment of journalists, political opponents, and religious minorities.
