U.S. Budget Deficit Surges to $1.99 Trillion, Third-Largest in American History

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Worthy News) – The United States recorded a staggering $1.99 trillion federal budget deficit in fiscal year 2026, the largest shortfall in five years and the third-largest in American history, as soaring interest payments, expanding government spending, and mounting national debt continue to strain the nation’s finances.

According to Treasury Department figures released Friday, the deficit increased $217 billion, or approximately 12%, from $1.78 trillion in fiscal 2025. Federal spending climbed to a record $7.4 trillion, outpacing record government revenues of $5.4 trillion.

One of the most troubling developments was the cost of servicing America’s national debt, which surpassed $40 trillion in August. Debt-service expenditures reached a record $1.36 trillion, a 12% increase over the previous year, consuming resources that could otherwise support national defense, infrastructure, and other federal priorities.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent attributed much of the widening deficit to higher interest rates, military expenditures associated with the Iran war, and $145 billion in tariff refunds following a Supreme Court ruling overturning portions of President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.

“We’re in a war and interest rates are high, but it would be flat without the tariff refunds,” Bessent said during an October 9 appearance at the Newsmax NPolicy Summit.

Defense spending also increased, while rising Social Security and Medicare obligations added further pressure to federal finances.

The deficit now represents approximately 6.2% of America’s gross domestic product, up from 5.8% the previous year, raising fresh questions about Washington’s ability to control spending without jeopardizing economic growth.

Despite the troubling figures, the Trump administration maintains that stronger economic growth, expanded domestic investment, and its broader economic policies can help reverse the nation’s deteriorating fiscal trajectory.

However, fiscal watchdogs warn that without meaningful spending reforms, rising borrowing costs could accelerate the debt crisis, leaving future generations facing higher taxes, reduced government services, or both.

With congressional midterm elections approaching on November 3, America’s growing debt burden is emerging as another major test for lawmakers, who face increasing pressure to restore fiscal discipline before the nation’s financial obligations become even more difficult to manage.

Prophetic Perspective: Could a Financial Collapse Pave the Way for a Global Economic System?

Beyond the immediate economic concerns, America’s mounting debt raises a larger question for those watching developments through the lens of biblical prophecy: Could a future financial collapse accelerate the creation of a centralized global economic system?

Revelation 13:16–17 describes a time when buying and selling will be controlled through a system requiring allegiance to the beast. While Scripture does not specify how such a system will emerge, a severe global financial crisis could provide the conditions for unprecedented economic restructuring, potentially accelerating the adoption of central bank digital currencies, digital identification, and internationally coordinated financial controls.

With governments already exploring digital currencies and increasingly interconnected financial systems, the infrastructure for greater centralized economic oversight is steadily developing.

This does not mean America’s growing debt will necessarily trigger the financial system described in Revelation. However, the convergence of unsustainable debt, advancing financial technology, and efforts toward greater international economic coordination is a development worth monitoring.

For students of biblical prophecy, the question is not simply whether another financial crisis is approaching, but whether such a crisis could ultimately become the catalyst for the worldwide economic system foretold in Revelation 13.
