Nine Killed In Florida Jet Crash As Investigators Probe Final Moments

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent

PALM BEACH, USA (Worthy News) – U.S. aviation investigators were examining the final moments of a private jet Monday after all nine people aboard were killed when the aircraft plunged into a residential area in Florida, erupting into a fireball and forcing hundreds of residents from their homes.

The Learjet 60 crashed Sunday near a busy roadway in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, not far from President Donald J. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, leaving a large crater and scattering burning debris across the neighborhood.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it crashed at about 12:50 p.m. local time.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard had died, describing the incident as a “horrific tragedy.”

“Please join me in praying for the families and loved ones of those we lost,” Duffy wrote on social media, adding that federal aviation authorities were closely monitoring the disaster.

PILOT’S DISTRESS CALLS

Air traffic control recordings indicated that the crew reported icing, moderate turbulence and precipitation before requesting permission to climb to a higher altitude.

“We have light, clear ice that is manageable and moderate turbulence,” a pilot told air traffic controllers before conditions deteriorated.

The aircraft subsequently entered a rapid descent, with a pilot declaring an emergency as its speed increased dramatically.

“We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute,” the pilot radioed before warning: “We’re going to crash into the ground.”

Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 said the jet’s descent rate exceeded 32,000 feet per minute at one point, before contact with the aircraft was lost.

GOVERNOR DESCRIBES DEVASTATION

Video footage showed the jet plunging toward the ground before exploding into a massive fireball near homes and passing vehicles.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the disaster as “cataclysmic” after receiving a briefing from local authorities.

“It looked like a missile going down,” DeSantis told reporters. “It left a big crater on the side of the road.”

He said wreckage had been scattered over a considerable distance, but authorities had received no immediate reports of people on the ground being killed or injured.

Residents described a terrifying explosion, with debris striking nearby homes and flames spreading across the crash site.

HUNDREDS AFFECTED

“Debris was everywhere. Debris hit my house. Everything was on fire. The road was on fire,” resident Anthony Blackmon told local television.

The disaster also disrupted life for hundreds of residents near a mobile-home community close to the crash site.

Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores said authorities were arranging emergency accommodation for about 600 people affected by the crash, with assistance from the American Red Cross.

Officials closed nearby Military Trail as emergency crews secured the wreckage and investigators prepared to examine the scene.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is leading the investigation with assistance from the FAA, dispatched investigators to Florida and scheduled a briefing in West Palm Beach on Monday.

AVIATION SAFETY QUESTIONS

The crash has renewed attention on the safety of private aviation in the United States, where thousands of business jets and smaller aircraft operate outside the scheduled commercial airline system.

Such flights form part of what regulators call general aviation, a broad category that includes private planes, corporate jets and recreational aircraft. General aviation has historically recorded higher fatal accident rates than scheduled airlines, although safety has improved in recent years.

According to the FAA, the general aviation fatal accident rate fell to an estimated 0.68 accidents per 100,000 flight hours in 2024, its lowest level since tracking began in 2009.

Investigators are expected to examine weather conditions, air traffic control recordings, flight data, maintenance records and the crew’s actions, particularly the reported icing and turbulence before the jet’s rapid descent.

However, officials have not established the cause of Sunday’s crash, and investigators caution against drawing conclusions before the evidence has been examined.
