(Worthy News) – The FBI has accused North Korean government-linked hackers of carrying out a massive cryptocurrency theft targeting Binance, stealing more than $6 billion in digital assets in what cybersecurity experts describe as the largest cryptocurrency heist in history.
In a public alert issued Saturday, October 31, federal investigators attributed the October 29 attack to a North Korean cyber operation known as TraderTraitor, a hacking group previously linked to major cryptocurrency thefts.
According to the Associated Press, approximately $6.3 billion in Bitcoin and other digital assets disappeared from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, within minutes.
FBI Moves to Block Laundering of Stolen Billions
The FBI, working alongside the U.S. Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation, reported that North Korean operatives have already begun converting stolen cryptocurrency into Ethereum, apparently preparing to move the funds through decentralized finance platforms and cryptocurrency swapping services to conceal their origins.
Federal authorities released a list of cryptocurrency wallet addresses associated with the theft and urged exchanges, blockchain investigators, and financial service providers to block transactions connected to the stolen assets.
Binance said Saturday that it had reserves sufficient to cover approximately 90% of the missing digital assets and pledged to fully reimburse affected customers.
North Korea’s Growing Cyberwarfare Threat
The attack underscores the expanding threat posed by North Korea’s state-sponsored hacking operations, which U.S. authorities have repeatedly linked to sophisticated financial crimes.
The TraderTraitor operation has also been associated with the $1.5 billion theft from cryptocurrency exchange Bybit in 2025.
U.S. authorities have long warned that North Korea uses illicit cyber operations to generate revenue for the isolated regime, raising concerns that stolen digital assets could help sustain its military and weapons programs.
The latest theft represents a significant escalation in the scale of North Korean cybercrime and highlights the vulnerability of global cryptocurrency markets to state-sponsored attacks.
