Israel Marks Three Years Since Oct. 7 Massacre With Memorials, Mourning and Calls for Accountability

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Israelis gathered across the country Wednesday to mark three years since the Hamas-led October 7 massacre, pausing to remember the roughly 1,200 people killed and 251 taken hostage on the deadliest single day in Israel’s history.

Commemorations began at 6:29 a.m., the moment the assault began on October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists breached Israel’s southern border as thousands of rockets were fired toward Israeli communities.

At Kibbutz Re’im, survivors and bereaved families returned to the site of the Nova music festival, where hundreds of young people were murdered and dozens abducted. Memorial ceremonies were scheduled throughout the country, with some municipalities lowering Israeli flags to half-staff.

The anniversary carried a different weight this year: It was the first October 7 commemoration since all remaining Israeli hostages — living and deceased — were returned from Gaza.

Twenty surviving hostages were released on October 13, 2025, including 11 people abducted from the Nova festival. The return of the captives has allowed many families to close one painful chapter even as survivors, former hostages and bereaved communities continue struggling with the scars left by the attack.

Israel Stops at the Moment the Attack Began

At noon, the October Council, representing survivors and bereaved families, called for a nationwide minute of silence.

A major memorial organized by survivors and families was scheduled for Wednesday night at Tel Aviv’s Yarkon Park, while the Nova community planned a separate ceremony at Re’im.

The Nova gathering carried particular significance because survivors, bereaved families and returned hostages could gather together for the first time since the massacre.

“We’re returning to the place where everything stopped,” Nova Tribe Community Association CEO Reef Peretz said ahead of the ceremony.

Reuters reported that survivors also gathered at devastated border communities including Kfar Aza, where residents remembered neighbors and relatives murdered three years ago. Across southern Israel, communities that became synonymous with the massacre continue rebuilding homes while preserving memorials to those who were lost.

Military Commander Acknowledges ‘Great Failure’

The anniversary also brought renewed reflection within Israel’s military establishment over how Hamas was able to carry out the unprecedented attack.

Speaking at an Eshkol Regional Council ceremony, IDF Southern Command chief Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor acknowledged what he called the military’s “great failure” to protect Israelis on October 7 while honoring residents who fought to defend their homes and families.

“The work is not yet over, the journey of revival is not complete,” Asor said.

He also warned Hamas that any renewed attack against Israeli civilians or IDF forces would bring a “sharp and powerful response.”

Political Divisions Remain Three Years Later

The solemn anniversary unfolded against the backdrop of Israel’s continuing political divisions.

Anti-government activists briefly blocked Tel Aviv’s Ayalon Highway while observing a moment of silence for those killed in the massacre and subsequent wars. Demonstrators also gathered outside government ministers’ homes and at intersections around the country, while activists dyed the fountain at Tel Aviv’s Dizengoff Square red.

Opposition political leaders separately visited massacre sites throughout southern Israel.

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett visited the Nova site near Re’im, while Gadi Eisenkot visited the roadside shelter where off-duty soldier Staff Sgt. Aner Shapira was killed after repeatedly throwing Hamas grenades back outside as he attempted to protect those sheltering inside.

Avigdor Liberman visited Kibbutz Kfar Aza, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir warned that Israel must learn the security lessons of October 7 to prevent another large-scale infiltration.

The anniversary comes less than three weeks before Israel’s October 27 election, with the failures surrounding October 7 expected to remain a defining political issue. AP reported that more than 60% of Israelis surveyed said their views concerning October 7 would be a central consideration in how they vote.

October 7 Remembered Around the World

The anniversary was also marked internationally.

Hundreds of ambassadors, senior diplomats and guests attended an event at United Nations headquarters in New York organized by Israel’s UN mission. The ceremony highlighted the stories of victims and survivors of the Nova massacre.

Jewish communities around the world planned memorial gatherings, while Israeli security officials warned of heightened threats against Israelis and Jews abroad surrounding the anniversary.

Israel’s National Security Council warned ahead of October 7 that Iran and terrorist organizations could attempt attacks timed to coincide with the anniversary.

The ceremonies came three years after an attack that fundamentally transformed Israel and reshaped the Middle East.

The October 7 massacre triggered the Gaza war and eventually widened into confrontation involving Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen and Iran. Three years later, the repercussions of that morning continue to shape Israeli security policy, politics and society.

Yet amid the political battles and unresolved questions over responsibility, Wednesday was first and foremost a day of remembrance — for families murdered in their homes, young people slaughtered while dancing at Nova, soldiers and civilians who died fighting terrorists, and those dragged into Gaza as hostages.
