(Worthy News) – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis delivered a blistering assessment of the Republican Party’s devastating 2026 midterm election losses Wednesday, warning that the GOP faces a political crisis that could threaten its national viability for years.
“This is close to an extinction-level event for Republicans,” DeSantis declared after Democrats captured both chambers of Congress and scored sweeping victories in traditionally Republican strongholds, including Texas.
Speaking at a news conference, DeSantis described Tuesday’s Democratic wave as the political equivalent of a meteor strike, warning that Florida would soon stand as the only Republican-controlled state among the nation’s ten most populous.
The governor argued that the election was less an endorsement of Democratic policies than a rejection of congressional Republicans who failed to deliver results in Washington.
“But this was not a positive view of the Democrats. This was a rejection of Republicans in Washington,” DeSantis said, adding that Democrats were simply the beneficiaries of voter dissatisfaction.
Despite the nationwide Republican collapse, Florida remained a conservative stronghold, electing Republican Byron Donalds as its next governor.
DeSantis expressed particular concern over the GOP’s losses in Texas, warning that without the Lone Star State as a reliable political anchor, Republicans could struggle to regain national power.
The Democratic takeover of Congress also threatens President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda and could complicate future Cabinet and Supreme Court nominations, setting the stage for two years of confrontation in Washington.
