China Detains Pastors as House Church Crackdown Intensifies

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – Chinese authorities have detained several pastors and church workers from a prominent unregistered congregation in Beijing, the latest sign of mounting pressure on China’s house church movement even as Christianity has experienced extraordinary growth since the Communist takeover more than seven decades ago.

According to The Christian Post, citing the U.S.-based religious freedom organization ChinaAid, authorities detained leaders connected with Beijing Jiaquan Church, an independent congregation that has operated in the Chinese capital for more than 20 years. The precise number detained and the charges against them were not immediately clear.

Jiaquan Church reportedly has about 1,000 members and has established churches and meeting locations elsewhere in China. The ministry has also operated the Noah Music School in Beijing for more than a decade, training worship leaders and musicians serving China’s house churches.

The detentions follow a broader crackdown on churches that refuse to operate under China’s state-controlled religious system. Authorities have targeted other influential congregations, including Zion Church and Early Rain Covenant Church. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has described China’s violations of religious freedom as “systematic, ongoing, and egregious” and recommended that China remain designated a Country of Particular Concern.

The Gospel’s Remarkable Growth Under Communism

The latest crackdown comes against the backdrop of one of the most striking developments in modern Christian history.

When the Communist Party established the People’s Republic of China in 1949, government estimates placed China’s Protestant population at roughly 700,000, alongside approximately 2.7 million Catholics. Foreign missionaries were eventually expelled, churches came under state control, and during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976, religious activity was effectively banned.

Yet Christianity survived underground.

When China began reopening following the Cultural Revolution, the church emerged far larger than many expected. Chinese government figures indicate the number of Christians worshiping in registered churches alone rose from about 6 million in 1982 to 14 million by 1997. Government estimates later placed China’s Protestant population at approximately 38 million in 2018.

The true number remains difficult to establish because millions worship in unregistered house churches and some believers may be reluctant to identify themselves in surveys. Pew Research Center cautions that available surveys do not demonstrate continued rapid growth in recent years. Meanwhile, Christian persecution watchdog Open Doors currently estimates approximately 96.7 million Christians live in China, although estimates vary substantially depending on methodology.

Even using the more conservative official figures, the transformation since 1949 has been dramatic: a Protestant community once numbered in the hundreds of thousands eventually grew into the tens of millions despite decades of Communist restrictions.

From Persecuted Church to Missionary Church

Perhaps even more remarkable is a missionary vision that emerged among Chinese Christians themselves: Back to Jerusalem.

The vision predates Communist rule, developing through indigenous Chinese Christian movements during the first half of the 20th century. Chinese believers envisioned carrying the Gospel westward from China through the largely unreached Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu regions between China and Jerusalem.

The concept was never primarily about evangelizing the city of Jerusalem itself. Rather, Jerusalem represented the western destination of a missionary movement traveling through the nations and peoples along the ancient Silk Road — effectively taking the Gospel westward across Asia toward the region where the Great Commission began.

The Communist takeover interrupted those early missionary efforts. Some pioneers were imprisoned, and organized missionary work became virtually impossible. Yet the vision survived underground and reemerged among China’s house churches decades later.

Modern advocates of Back to Jerusalem have spoken of eventually mobilizing 100,000 Chinese missionaries to reach unreached peoples across the 10/40 Window. That number remains an aspirational goal rather than a count of missionaries already deployed, but the movement says Chinese believers are already serving outside China in areas of Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.

There is a striking irony in China’s modern Christian story. A government that sought to restrict Christianity after taking power in 1949 ultimately presided over an era in which the Gospel spread from hundreds of thousands of Protestants to a Christian population now estimated by some organizations in the tens of millions — while portions of the Chinese church began looking beyond their own persecution toward fulfilling the Great Commission among other nations.

For China’s underground believers, the story remains unfinished: the church that endured decades of pressure is not merely seeking to survive. Many believe they have been prepared to carry the Gospel beyond China’s borders.
