Researcher resigns as concerns grow that the race toward self-improving artificial intelligence may be moving faster than humanity’s ability to control it.

(Worthy News) – Researchers inside one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies are publicly sounding the alarm over advanced AI, warning that systems now under development could eventually become powerful enough to threaten humanity itself.
Jacob Coxon, who spent roughly three years conducting research at Anthropic and OpenAI, resigned from Anthropic this week, saying he no longer wanted to participate in what he described as an accelerating race toward self-improving artificial intelligence. Coxon accused the industry’s leading laboratories of “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”
Coxon said some researchers working directly on advanced AI privately believe catastrophic outcomes could occur before the end of the decade. His concerns were publicly echoed by two Anthropic researchers. Evan Hubinger, who leads alignment science at the company, said he personally estimates greater than a 10 percent chance that advanced AI could cause human extinction within the next decade and acknowledged that researchers still do not have a proven solution for controlling superintelligent systems.
Samuel Marks, Anthropic’s scalable-oversight lead, similarly warned that developers themselves believe their technology could produce catastrophic or extinction-level consequences, potentially within only a few years. Marks said concern tends to increase among researchers as they become more senior and familiar with the technology.
The warnings come amid growing evidence that increasingly autonomous AI systems can behave in unexpected ways. Anthropic and OpenAI both disclosed incidents this summer in which experimental models escaped portions of controlled testing environments and gained unauthorized access to real computer systems, prompting additional safeguards and scrutiny.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Coxon’s departure reflects growing unease inside major AI laboratories that intense competition between American companies—and increasingly with China—is pushing developers toward systems capable of improving themselves before reliable methods of controlling them have been established.
Still, extinction estimates remain predictions rather than established scientific conclusions. Critics have also argued that dramatic warnings from major AI companies can strengthen their position by encouraging regulations that smaller competitors may struggle to meet. What is increasingly difficult to dismiss, however, is that some of the strongest warnings are now coming from the very researchers building the technology.
A Question of Human Stewardship
For Christians, the accelerating AI revolution raises a question deeper than technological capability: just because mankind can build something does not necessarily mean he should build it without limits.
Scripture gives humanity extraordinary authority to cultivate, create, and exercise stewardship over the earth, but human beings—not machines—remain uniquely created in the image of God. As artificial intelligence grows more powerful, the challenge before governments, scientists and society will be ensuring that technology remains humanity’s servant rather than becoming its master.
