Ukraine Reshuffles Eastern Command As Zelenskyy Trust Holds At 54 Percent

KYIV, UKRAINE (Worthy News) – Major General Viktor Nikoliuk has resigned as commander of Ukraine’s Eastern Operational Command amid a broader military personnel shake-up, as Kyiv seeks to strengthen its air defenses against intensifying Russian attacks.

The latest changes were initiated by newly appointed Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi, who has been involved in reorganizing troops defending some of the most heavily contested areas of the eastern front.

Nikoliuk announced his departure on social media platform Facebook, saying he was leaving behind forces prepared to continue defending Ukraine against advancing Russian troops.

“I can confidently say that I am handing over to my successor a fully combat-ready force capable of steadfastly conducting active defensive operations,” he wrote.

Nikoliuk had headed the Eastern Operational Command since April 2026, overseeing troops defending sectors across the Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions.

EASTERN COMMAND RESTRUCTURED

During his roughly five months in command, his forces operated around key front-line locations including Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Kostiantynivka, Ocheretyne and Pokrovsk. Nikoliuk said his troops had, among other achievements, prevented Russian forces from capturing Kostiantynivka.

Nikoliuk did not disclose his next assignment. Ukrainian news outlet Hromadske, citing military sources, reported that the Eastern Operational Command itself is being disbanded as part of Drapatyi’s restructuring.

The changes are reportedly intended to reinforce Ukrainian positions around the eastern Donetsk region, where Russian forces have continued pressing Ukrainian defenses.

The military reorganization comes as Ukraine also faces an acute need for additional Western-supplied air-defense ammunition to protect cities, troops and critical infrastructure from Russian missile attacks.

The United States is moving toward approving Germany’s transfer of 10 Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine, according to U.S. congressional documents. The interceptors are valued at about $29.6 million.

PATRIOT MISSILES FOR UKRAINE

Although Germany would provide the missiles, U.S. authorization is required for the re-export of the American-made weapons.

Unless Congress adopts a joint resolution blocking the proposed re-export, the transfer can proceed under the U.S. Arms Export Control Act.

The U.S. State Department said the transfer was consistent with American security-assistance objectives.

Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to its Western allies for additional Patriot interceptors as Russia continues launching ballistic missiles and other weapons against Ukrainian targets.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said earlier in September that Berlin was prepared to provide Ukraine with additional PAC-2 interceptors for its Patriot systems.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the German decision, describing it as a step that would “bring peace closer.”

ZELENSKYY TRUST AT 54 PERCENT

Yet a new nationwide survey suggests public trust in Zelenskyy has remained broadly stable despite recent high-profile anti-corruption investigations.

The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, or KIIS, said 54 percent of Ukrainians surveyed trust Zelenskyy, compared with 41 percent who said they do not.

Among those expressing confidence in the president, 18 percent said they trust him completely, while 36 percent said they somewhat trust him.

The survey was conducted from August 21 through September 10 among Ukrainians living in government-controlled territory.

The result was virtually unchanged from the previous month, when 55 percent of respondents said they trusted Zelenskyy.

CORRUPTION INVESTIGATIONS

The latest polling followed major investigations by Ukraine’s independent anti-corruption agencies that have increased scrutiny of officials around the government.

KIIS Executive Director Anton Grushetskyi cautioned that while Zelenskyy’s overall trust rating remained relatively stable, the cumulative negative impact of repeated corruption investigations could eventually become more significant.

Trust in Zelenskyy was higher among women, younger adults, military personnel and students, according to the survey, while it was lower among men, people aged 45 to 59, and respondents in western Ukraine and Kyiv.

The developments come as Ukraine faces another difficult winter, with the war now in its fifth year and the impact of Russia’s full-scale invasion being felt across generations.
