U.S. Sending Third Aircraft Carrier to Middle East in Massive Military Buildup Around Iran

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – The Pentagon is deploying the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group and the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, according to U.S. officials cited by The Wall Street Journal. Together, the deployments could add roughly 9,000 to 10,000 American personnel to a region where more than 50,000 U.S. troops are already stationed.

The Roosevelt departed San Diego on Sunday, while the Makin Island group—carrying Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit—departed Monday.

Two American carriers, the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, are already operating in the Middle East. If the George Washington remains when the Theodore Roosevelt arrives, the United States will once again have three carrier strike groups operating simultaneously in the region.

That is no routine deployment.

Three Carriers Signal Extraordinary U.S. Firepower

A three-carrier presence gives U.S. Central Command the ability to sustain major air operations from multiple locations while reducing dependence on land bases that could themselves come under Iranian missile and drone attack.

The carriers bring fighter and strike aircraft, airborne command-and-control platforms, electronic-warfare aircraft and helicopters, while their accompanying destroyers provide additional missile-defense and Tomahawk land-attack capabilities.

The Associated Press reported that the buildup could place more than 20,000 U.S. sailors and Marines and hundreds of aircraft in the region.

The United States also has roughly 20 Navy ships operating in the region, according to the Journal, as American forces enforce the maritime blockade of Iran and protect commercial shipping through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz.

The deployment therefore gives Washington substantially greater capacity to simultaneously defend American forces, protect shipping, intercept Iranian missiles and drones, enforce the blockade and conduct sustained offensive strikes if President Donald Trump orders another major campaign against Iran.

The buildup comes after Trump rejected Tehran’s latest ceasefire proposal and indicated that American strikes could resume following the November midterm elections if an agreement is not reached.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has also extended deployments of U.S. air-defense forces and elements of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, further increasing America’s ability to respond rapidly to another escalation.

The Last Time America Had Three Carriers There

Remarkably, this would actually be the second three-carrier concentration in the Middle East this year.

In April, during Operation Epic Fury, the USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Gerald R. Ford, and USS George H.W. Bush operated simultaneously in the Middle East. CENTCOM said the three carriers brought more than 200 aircraft and 15,000 sailors and Marines into the theater.

What made that deployment historic was what preceded it: before April 2026, the United States had not maintained three carrier strike groups simultaneously in the Middle East since 2003, when American forces invaded Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

During the 2003 campaign, U.S. naval power was even larger. Navy historical records show that five carrier strike groups participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, with the Abraham Lincoln, Constellation, and Kitty Hawk operating in the Arabian Gulf while the Harry S. Truman and Theodore Roosevelt operated from the Mediterranean.

There was a brief overlap involving three carriers in the CENTCOM region in January 2012 as one carrier relieved another, but Navy reporting indicates they did not remain together as an operational three-carrier force.

Thus, if all three carriers remain after the Roosevelt arrives, the United States will have assembled a three-carrier Middle East force twice in 2026 after going more than two decades without such a sustained concentration.

Iran Confrontation Entering Another Critical Phase

The deployment comes as pressure on Tehran is increasing economically and militarily.

Iran’s ability to use the Strait of Hormuz as leverage has weakened as the U.S. Navy and Gulf states have restored shipping and expanded alternative export routes. At the same time, Iran remains under a U.S. maritime blockade, raising concerns that Tehran could resort to further military escalation as its economic options narrow.

Markets immediately recognized the significance of the latest American buildup. Brent crude jumped 4.4% Thursday to $102.31 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate climbed 2.7%, as traders weighed the possibility of renewed U.S. strikes against Iran.

Three aircraft carriers do not by themselves mean another major offensive has been ordered. The George Washington could still leave the theater before the Roosevelt arrives. But if Washington keeps all three in place, the concentration would provide the Pentagon with a level of naval aviation, missile defense and long-range striking power rarely assembled in the Middle East outside periods of major war.

And after the United States went from 2003 until April 2026 without such a sustained three-carrier concentration, assembling that level of force for the second time in six months underscores just how dramatically the strategic landscape surrounding Iran has changed.
