U.S. Intelligence Warns Putin Could Test NATO With Limited Military Incursion

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

WASHINGTON D.C. (Worthy News) – U.S. intelligence agencies are warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin could attempt a limited attack against a NATO member within the next several years, potentially testing whether the alliance is willing to respond militarily, according to a Wall Street Journal exclusive.

The new assessment marks a shift from earlier U.S. intelligence forecasts that Putin would avoid directly provoking NATO while Russia remained engaged in its war against Ukraine.

Officials told the Journal that potential Russian actions could range from a major cyberattack against a NATO country to a small-scale military incursion designed to test the alliance without immediately triggering a broader war.

The warning comes as concerns grow over Western military readiness. U.S. officials said American stockpiles of several critical weapons have been significantly reduced following years of arms transfers to Ukraine and the recent U.S. conflict with Iran.

Among the weapons identified as potentially strained are long-range Precision Strike Missiles, Army Tactical Missile Systems and Stinger surface-to-air missiles.

Any deliberate Russian attack on NATO territory would raise the question of Article 5, the alliance’s collective-defense provision declaring that an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all.

European governments have increasingly warned that Russia could pose a broader military threat beyond Ukraine as Moscow rebuilds and restructures its armed forces. However, assessments differ over how soon Russia would be capable or willing to directly challenge NATO. Estonia’s foreign intelligence service, for example, assessed earlier this year that Russia was unlikely to attack Estonia or another NATO country during 2026.
