(Worthy News) – The State Department has approved a possible $24.3 billion sale of 48 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, bringing the kingdom closer to acquiring one of America’s most advanced warplanes.
The proposed package includes 49 engines, communications equipment, spare parts, and support. U.S. officials say the aircraft would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to defend itself and work alongside American and allied forces.
Washington also says the sale would not change the military balance in the region. That assurance matters to Israel, which has long pressed the United States to preserve its military edge as other Middle Eastern nations seek advanced weapons.
Israel is currently the only country in the region operating F-35s. The prospect of Saudi Arabia joining it has raised questions about how Washington will protect that advantage, even as the two countries share concerns about regional threats.
The State Department’s approval is a significant step, but the sale is still only a proposal. The jets have not been sold or delivered, leaving the deal’s final terms and its effect on the region to be seen.
