Median household income reached a record high in 2025, while the official poverty rate fell to 10.2%. The gains are real, even if many families still feel squeezed.

(Worthy News) – Two figures in the latest Census Bureau report offer a clear sign of economic progress: American households earned more, and a smaller share of the country lived in poverty in 2025.

Inflation-adjusted median household income rose 2.6% to $87,460, the highest level recorded since the bureau began tracking it in 1967. That is a gain in purchasing power, not merely a larger number of dollars on a paycheck. At the same time, the official poverty rate fell from 10.7% to 10.2%. The Census Bureau’s annual release puts the number of Americans living below the official poverty line at 34.5 million.

More income, less poverty

The two measures tell different parts of the same story. Median income shows how the household in the middle is doing. The poverty rate shows how many people fall below a basic income threshold. When income rises after inflation and poverty falls in the same year, both deserve attention.

The improvement reached children, too. Their official poverty rate fell to a historic low of 13.4%, according to the Census Bureau. For families trying to build a stable home and give their children a sound start, that is more than a line in an economic report.

There are limits to what the figures show. The official poverty measure counts pretax cash income and leaves out some government benefits and living costs. The bureau’s broader Supplemental Poverty Measure, which accounts for taxes, benefits, and expenses such as housing and medical care, stood at 13.1% in 2025 and was not statistically different from 2024.
