(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump personally welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews Wednesday evening, beginning a three-day state visit expected to focus on some of the most consequential disputes between the world’s two largest economies — including Iran, artificial intelligence, trade, Taiwan and energy.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, on the tarmac in a rare presidential airport welcome ahead of Thursday’s formal White House arrival ceremony. The state visit, Xi’s first to Washington in more than a decade, includes bilateral talks, a state dinner and a Friday visit to the National Archives. The White House said Thursday’s ceremony would feature a military flyover by a B-2 Spirit bomber and four F-22 Raptors.

The summit comes four months after Trump traveled to Beijing, where the two leaders reached agreements aimed at stabilizing relations after an escalating tariff battle. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said this week that Washington and Beijing have now agreed to extend their existing trade truce until January 10, giving negotiators additional time to pursue a broader agreement.

Iran Looms Over the Talks

Iran is expected to be among the most difficult geopolitical issues confronting the two leaders.

China remains Iran’s largest oil customer and a major economic partner, giving Beijing significant financial leverage over Tehran as the United States seeks to increase economic pressure on the Iranian government. U.S. officials have pressed Beijing to curtail financial and commercial ties that Washington says help Tehran withstand sanctions.

Bessent has said China’s financial relationship with Iran would be discussed during the summit. Reuters has also reported that Washington has investigated trade arrangements allegedly allowing Iran to evade sanctions, while China’s Foreign Ministry has said it was unaware of such activity.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast, R-Fla., has urged Trump to press Xi over China’s support for Tehran, arguing that instability surrounding Iran and Middle Eastern energy supplies has contributed to higher costs for American consumers.

U.S. and China Race for AI Supremacy

Artificial intelligence is emerging as another major battlefield between Washington and Beijing.

Both nations are pouring enormous resources into advanced AI systems while the United States continues restricting China’s access to some of America’s most powerful semiconductor technology. Trump has repeatedly emphasized that maintaining American leadership in AI is a national-security and economic priority.

Despite the fierce competition, U.S. officials are exploring limited cooperation designed to prevent an AI-related crisis from spiraling into a larger confrontation.

Bessent said U.S. and Chinese officials have discussed establishing an AI notification mechanism, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio compared the concept to a Cold War-style hotline that could allow the two countries to communicate rapidly if an AI incident threatened national security, economies or international stability.

American Natural Gas Could Become Part of Trade Deal

Energy could also produce one of the summit’s most tangible economic agreements.

Reuters reported that Washington and Beijing have been discussing reducing or eliminating China’s 15% tariff on U.S. liquefied natural gas, potentially as part of a wider package involving roughly $30 billion in reciprocal tariff reductions covering energy, agriculture and other goods.

China imposed the LNG tariff in February 2025 during the renewed trade confrontation with Washington, effectively bringing U.S. LNG shipments to China to a halt.

A reopening of the Chinese market could be significant for American producers. The United States is the world’s largest LNG exporter, while China is the world’s largest LNG importer. U.S. export capacity is expected to expand by roughly 10 billion cubic feet per day through 2027, according to Reuters.

The Iran conflict has added urgency to the issue because disruptions in Middle Eastern energy supplies have intensified competition for LNG shipments, particularly in Asia and Europe.
