Three Children, Teacher Killed In Latest US School Shooting; Community Prays For Victims

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent

BEND, USA (Worthy News) – Parents waited anxiously to be reunited with their children, while hundreds of residents gathered for prayers and a candlelight vigil after a teenage gunman killed three young students and a teacher at an elementary school in the northwestern United States.

The children, ages 5, 8, and 11, were killed Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, a city in central Oregon, about 175 miles (280 kilometers) southeast of Portland.

A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were critically wounded and rushed to St. Charles Medical Center, U.S. authorities said. The victims’ names were not immediately released.

The suspected gunman, a 16-year-old boy, was shot and killed by a community member who pursued him into the school and confronted him, police said.

The attack was the latest in a series of deadly school shootings in the United States, renewing concerns about the safety of children and teachers in American classrooms.

PARENTS WAIT FOR CHILDREN

As police evacuated classrooms, anxious families gathered at a nearby church, where students and staff were taken to be reunited with their loved ones.

Among them was Drew Sharp, whose son attended fifth grade at the school. He described how younger children were brought off the buses first, prolonging his anxious wait for his son.

Another local resident, Erin Johnson, said she heard what sounded like gunfire while visiting her parents near the school.

She recalled hearing a neighbor scream as police vehicles rushed toward the building.

The neighbor’s children attended Silver Rail and were later confirmed safe.

Johnson expressed grief for the young victims, describing them simply as “babies.”

FEARING THE WORST

Irvin Ornelas, whose 10-year-old brother attended the school, said he believed he saw the gunman heading toward the building.

“I saw him throw his gun over and him jump over the fence very quickly,” Ornelas recalled.

His brother survived unharmed, but Ornelas said he feared the worst as the emergency unfolded.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the violence began shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday when emergency dispatchers received a call from someone reporting that a person armed with a long gun had fired several shots at their vehicle.

Dispatchers subsequently received dozens of calls reporting that the gunman had entered Silver Rail Elementary School.

GUNMAN FORCES ENTRY

Investigators said the teenager forced his way through locked doors by shooting at them, raising questions about the effectiveness of security measures intended to protect students and teachers.

Police officers arrived within three minutes of the first emergency call, but the attacker had already been fatally shot.

“An officer reported that the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him,” Krantz told reporters.

Officers entering the building subsequently discovered the bodies of the four victims and provided emergency assistance to the wounded.

Authorities did not immediately identify the gunman or establish a motive. Investigators were also examining whether the teenager had any connection to the school.

WEAPON UNDER INVESTIGATION

Law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation said the attacker used a shotgun. A law enforcement official briefed on the case said it was a pump-action shotgun reportedly purchased by the suspect’s mother.

Police had not publicly confirmed the precise type of firearm used or disclosed how many shots were fired during the attack.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Oregon State Police joined local authorities in investigating the shooting.

FBI Director Kash Patel said federal agents were assisting the investigation, which included efforts to establish how the teenager obtained the weapon.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the unidentified community member who confronted the attacker, saying the person’s actions had “heroically intervened to stop further loss of life.”

GOVERNOR PRAISES COURAGE

Kotek acknowledged that such an intervention also carried a heavy emotional burden.

“All Oregonians mourn this loss today,” Kotek said during a news briefing. “This is a horrible day. No parent should have to have this kind of day. And no community should have to live through this kind of day.”

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook struggled to describe the devastation confronting families and educators.

“Today an unthinkable tragedy happened at Silver Rail Elementary School,” he told reporters.

“No community should have to do what we are doing right now. I don’t have any words for what this community is feeling right now.”

PRAYERS AND CANDLELIGHT VIGIL

As darkness fell Thursday, hundreds of residents gathered at Drake Park in Bend for a candlelight vigil honoring those killed and wounded.

Local religious leaders joined residents in offering prayers, while mourners sang songs and remembered the victims.

Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler, herself the mother of an elementary school student, acknowledged the profound grief gripping the community.

Flowers, balloons, and candles were also left outside the school as residents struggled to comprehend the loss of three children and a teacher.

The Bend-La Pine school district canceled Friday classes and athletic activities, allowing students, teachers, and families time to grieve.

LATEST SCHOOL TRAGEDY

The killings added Bend to a long list of American communities devastated by school shootings, including Columbine, Colorado, in 1999; Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012; Parkland, Florida, in 2018; and Uvalde, Texas, in 2022.

At Sandy Hook, 20 young children and six educators were murdered. In Uvalde, a gunman killed 19 elementary school students and two teachers, prompting renewed scrutiny of police responses and school security.

According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, the United States recorded 235 shooting incidents involving primary and secondary schools in 2025, compared with 352 in 2023.

The database uses a broad definition that includes incidents in which firearms are discharged or brandished on school property, even when nobody is injured.

Although the annual number of incidents has declined from its 2023 peak, school gun violence remains a persistent concern across the United States.

NATIONAL DEBATE CONTINUES

The latest killings have renewed disagreements over gun ownership laws, school security, and the role of armed civilians in responding to violent attacks.

Gun-control advocates have urged tighter restrictions on firearms, while supporters of gun rights have emphasized school security and the ability of armed citizens to intervene during attacks.

The shooting also raised questions about how a 16-year-old obtained the weapon and whether warning signs could have been identified before the violence.

Yet in Bend, those wider debates were overshadowed by the grief of families mourning children and a teacher who had gone to school Thursday morning and never returned home.

For a community gathered in prayer, the immediate concern remained with the bereaved families and the two survivors, who remained hospitalized in critical condition, according to the latest information provided by authorities.
