Spanish Evangelical Churches Mobilize To Help Train Crash Survivors As Death Toll Rises

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent

MADRID/TOLEDO (Worthy News) – Evangelical churches and Christian humanitarian organizations across Spain are mobilizing to help survivors and grieving families after a high-speed train collision near the town of Urda killed at least 69 people and injured about 100 others.

Christian volunteers have begun distributing essential supplies, while evangelical chaplains are being mobilized to provide what they call spiritual and emotional support to those affected by one of Spain’s deadliest railway disasters in recent decades.

The evangelical humanitarian organization Remar has deployed volunteers to an emergency reception center in Urda, in the central province of Toledo, where they are assisting survivors and relatives.

Evangelical believers from nearby Los Yébenes have also visited emergency shelters to offer assistance, according to the Christian news outlet Evangélico Digital.

EVANGELICAL CHAPLAINS MOBILIZED

The relief efforts come as Spain’s national evangelical federation, FEREDE, urges congregations to stand alongside grieving families through prayer and practical assistance.

The Christian organization Decisión has announced the first emergency activation of its newly established Brigada Decisión, a disaster-response initiative officially launched just one day before the collision.

The organization is preparing to send trained chaplains to the disaster area to support survivors, relatives and emergency responders.

Its chaplaincy team, led by Carmelo Troya, is part of a wider initiative designed to mobilize multidisciplinary teams during the first 72 hours of major disasters and social emergencies.

CHRISTIAN DISASTER RESPONSE

“We ask God to bring comfort to the families who have lost their loved ones and that the injured may receive the care they need,” the organization declared.

Brigada Decisión has asked churches to pray for those affected but is not currently recruiting additional volunteers. The initiative eventually hopes to establish a network of more than 100 trained volunteers, working alongside emergency services and civil protection authorities.

FEREDE has expressed condolences to the victims’ families and appealed particularly to churches in Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid and Andalusia to make themselves available to survivors and relatives.

The federation also praised emergency workers, medical personnel and security services responding to the disaster.

CHURCHES URGED TO HELP

Its appeal encourages congregations to offer personal support to people who have lost loved ones or survived the collision.

FEREDE has also called for a thorough and transparent investigation to establish what happened and help prevent similar disasters, without assigning responsibility for the crash.

The Christian response comes as Spain observes three days of national mourning announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

The disaster occurred Wednesday at about 8:54 a.m. between Los Yébenes and Urda, in Toledo province, when a Renfe AVE high-speed train carrying 397 passengers struck the rear of a stationary Iryo train with 147 people aboard.

DEADLY TRAIN COLLISION

Several carriages derailed, leaving emergency workers searching the wreckage for survivors and victims.

Authorities confirmed at least 69 deaths Thursday, while about 100 people were injured, including 15 reported in critical condition.

Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente indicated that an erroneous authorization from railway infrastructure operator Adif’s control center may have allowed the Renfe train to resume its journey following a safety-system failure.

However, he emphasized that investigators must establish the precise circumstances and determine responsibility.

SPAIN MOURNS VICTIMS

The tragedy follows another major railway disaster in January near Adamuz, in Córdoba province, which killed 46 people.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced three days of national mourning and promised a thorough investigation into the latest collision.

Spanish railway operators Renfe and Iryo have established assistance arrangements for affected families, including reception facilities and psychological support.

For evangelical churches and Christian relief organizations, the immediate priority remains helping those affected cope with the consequences of the tragedy.

PRAYERS AND PRACTICAL SUPPORT

The Christian response combines material assistance, pastoral care and prayers for those mourning loved ones, while investigators seek answers about how two high-speed trains collided.

These efforts come from a growing evangelical community in a predominantly Roman Catholic nation. FEREDE estimates that Spain has about 1.5 million evangelical Christians, while a June 2026 survey found that 54.8 percent of Spanish adults identified as Catholic, including those who do not regularly practice their faith.

Pope Leo XIV has also expressed his deep sorrow over the disaster in a telegram sent through Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin to Archbishop Francisco Cerro Chaves of Toledo.

The Pope prayed for those killed, offered condolences to grieving families, wished the injured a speedy recovery and encouraged rescue workers, offering his blessing as a sign of “hope in the risen Lord.”
