Russia Attacks Ukraine As NATO Confronts Moscow Over Undersea Sabotage Plot (Worthy News In-Depth)

KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Russia launched fresh air attacks on Ukraine early Friday after NATO reportedly confronted Russian vessels trying to sabotage undersea cables, highlighting concerns that Moscow is attempting to extend the war by targeting Europe’s critical infrastructure.

Moscow’s strikes injured at least two people in Kyiv and sparked a fire in a nine-story apartment building, Ukrainian authorities said, extending a week of bombardments on cities, transport routes and other infrastructure.

The latest violence came as Western officials revealed that NATO forces had confronted Russian vessels in Arctic waters that were allegedly training to sabotage undersea cables using secret technology.

Western officials said the confrontation occurred this spring near Norway’s remote Svalbard archipelago. Norway’s Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik confirmed that his Nordic nation was involved in a coordinated military operation with allies following Russian activity in and near Norwegian and British waters.

British and Norwegian officials later took their findings to Moscow to show that NATO was aware of the technology and Russia’s activities, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

SECRET SABOTAGE TECHNOLOGY

Western representatives declined to explain exactly how the technology works, underscoring the secrecy surrounding the alleged Russian operation.

Sandvik said the joint operation was intended to demonstrate that Russia could not conduct such activities undetected.

“Through our joint operation, we sent a clear message to Russia that they cannot operate covertly,” he stressed, adding that it was “in no one’s interest to escalate tensions in the High North.”

Britain’s Defense Ministry pointed to previous statements about attempted covert activities in and near Norwegian and British waters by Russia’s Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research, known by its Russian acronym GUGI.

Washington and London have imposed sanctions on the secretive directorate, which specializes in deep-sea operations.

CIA WARNING TO MOSCOW

U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe visited intelligence counterparts in Moscow in August, in part to warn Russia against escalating sabotage operations in Europe, according to people familiar with the matter.

It remained unclear whether Ratcliffe specifically raised Russia’s covert subsea operations during the talks, and the Kremlin declined to disclose what was discussed.

Russia’s Defense Ministry did not respond to requests for comment about the Arctic incident, while the Kremlin has consistently denied conducting sabotage operations in NATO countries or planning a confrontation with the alliance.

Western intelligence officials have expressed mounting concern that Moscow could expand covert operations against European states as the war in Ukraine continues.

Undersea cables are particularly vulnerable. Two fiber-optic cables stretching about 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) between Svalbard and mainland Norway carry large amounts of satellite data.

CRITICAL CABLE NETWORK

The cables serve the SvalSat satellite ground station on Svalbard, described as the world’s largest and part of the Near Space Network operated by U.S. space agency NASA.

Russia did not damage the cables during the operation. Western officials said Moscow’s forces were practicing how the secret technology could be used in a potential conflict with NATO before allied forces prevented them from completing the exercise.

Concerns about such operations have grown since the 2022 destruction of three of the four Nord Stream undersea pipelines that had carried Russian gas to Germany.

NATO allies have since stepped up surveillance of critical infrastructure beneath European waters.

The Arctic confrontation emerged publicly as Ukraine faced another Russian aerial assault early Friday, underscoring the increasingly broad security challenges confronting Kyiv and its Western allies.

KYIV UNDER ATTACK

Kyiv authorities urged residents to seek shelter during a drone alert before strikes hit the Ukrainian capital.

Emergency crews were dispatched after the nine-story residential building caught fire, while authorities initially reported at least two people injured.

The bombardment followed several days of deadly Russian drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, including attacks on railway infrastructure and passenger trains as Moscow maintains pressure on the country’s transportation network.

Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians as their increasingly destructive war, triggered by Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, continues.

Yet the Arctic confrontation and bombings of Ukraine have alarmed NATO governments, with the war’s impact felt far beyond the battlefield, threatening infrastructure vital to European communications and security.
