Poland Arrests Suspected Russian Spies Over Military Supplies To Moscow

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Europe Bureau Chief

WARSAW/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Polish authorities say they have detained six people, including a Russian woman, suspected of illegally supplying military components to Russia, with four facing espionage charges. The announcement Thursday highlighted mounting concerns about Moscow’s alleged intelligence and sabotage operations in member states of the NATO military alliance, allegations Russia denies.

Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) said investigators had uncovered a cross-border network allegedly transferring components used in ammunition and weapons systems to Russia.

Five Polish citizens, aged between 25 and 52, and a 37-year-old Russian woman were detained, authorities said.

Four suspects, including the Russian woman, were charged with espionage and placed in pretrial detention for three months. Two others face organized-crime charges and were released under restrictions.

Investigators believe the network operated between June 2023 and December 2025, moving military-related equipment through Poland and Lithuania to Russia’s Kaliningrad region, a heavily militarized Russian territory bordering both countries.

MILITARY SUPPLIES INVESTIGATED

The components were reportedly worth more than 2 million Polish zlotys, or about $530,000, despite Western sanctions and export controls imposed following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Polish authorities are investigating whether the suspects knowingly assisted Russian intelligence services and circumvented restrictions designed to prevent military equipment from reaching Moscow.

Poland, one of Ukraine’s strongest European supporters, has repeatedly accused Russia of conducting espionage, cyberattacks and sabotage operations on its territory.

The country has also become a crucial logistical hub for Western military assistance to Ukraine, making its transport infrastructure and security installations potential intelligence targets.

Polish authorities say nearly 100 people have been implicated in espionage and sabotage investigations since January 2024.

NATO SECURITY CONCERNS

Kaliningrad, where the alleged network reportedly delivered military-related components, hosts significant Russian military facilities and lies between Poland and Lithuania, both members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

European governments have warned about suspected Russian efforts to obtain restricted technologies through intermediaries and cross-border procurement networks despite sanctions targeting Moscow’s defense industry.

Russia has repeatedly rejected Western allegations that it is conducting a coordinated campaign of sabotage against European countries.
