(Worthy News) – North Korea says it has successfully tested a new missile system believed to carry a hypersonic glide vehicle, further expanding Pyongyang’s growing nuclear-capable arsenal.
North Korean state media said leader Kim Jong Un personally observed the test, calling the weapon a major advance that would strengthen the country’s war readiness and give its enemies an “incurable headache.”
South Korea’s military said North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area, with one traveling about 450 kilometers and the other more than 600 kilometers before landing in the sea.
Photos released by Pyongyang appeared to show the Hwasong-11Ma, a short-range ballistic missile fitted with a maneuverable warhead North Korea has described as hypersonic. Such weapons are designed to travel at extremely high speeds while changing course, potentially making them more difficult to intercept.
Outside analysts, however, continue to question whether North Korea has fully demonstrated the speed and maneuverability required for an operational hypersonic weapons system.
The test comes as tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula despite renewed diplomatic overtures from President Donald Trump and continued coordination among the United States, South Korea and Japan.
