(Worthy News) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday he would introduce two bills aimed at people who, in his words, slander Israeli soldiers abroad. One would allow citizenship to be revoked; the other would increase the damages they could face in a lawsuit.
In a video reported by The Times of Israel, Netanyahu singled out opposition leader Yair Golan, former military advocate general Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, and the makers of the recent film NAZA. He said he expects Zionist parties to support the measures.
The announcement comes amid a dispute over the film’s portrayal of the military’s conduct in Gaza. Israel has a duty to defend its soldiers against false accusations. Taking away citizenship over speech, however, is a grave step. The bills’ wording and the safeguards they provide will matter.
