(Worthy News) – House Speaker Mike Johnson canceled votes scheduled for Thursday, September 17, sending lawmakers home a day early for their planned recess before the November midterm elections. The House majority leader’s schedule had listed Thursday as a day for legislative business.
The shorter week also delays a confrontation over Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., introduced articles of impeachment over Hegseth’s handling of the Iran war. His effort had been expected to force a House vote Thursday; with that session canceled, the vote moves beyond the recess, Bloomberg reported.
The decision comes after the House voted Tuesday for a third time to end U.S. involvement in the Iran war. None of those measures has reached the president’s desk. For lawmakers who want Congress to settle the question of war powers, leaving Washington means another wait.
