(Worthy News) – House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries formally launched his bid to become the next Speaker of the House on Wednesday, unveiling an ambitious 100-day agenda that includes reversing President Donald Trump’s economic policies, investigating his administration, and ending the ongoing war with Iran.
Following Democrats’ sweeping victories in Tuesday’s midterm elections, which delivered control of both chambers of Congress, Jeffries outlined his priorities in a letter to Democratic lawmakers, declaring that his party would move aggressively to challenge the Trump administration when the new Congress convenes in January.
The New York Democrat pledged to reverse Medicaid cuts, restore food assistance funding, extend Affordable Care Act subsidies, eliminate Trump’s tariffs, and bring the Iranian conflict to an end.
Jeffries also promised congressional investigations into the administration, arguing that lawmakers must reassert their constitutional oversight authority.
Iran War Could Face Critical January Deadline
The Democrats’ commitment to ending the Iran war could introduce a new urgency into Trump’s military calculations, potentially creating pressure to accelerate operations against Tehran before the new Congress is sworn in on January 3, 2027.
Jeffries specifically identified ending the conflict as a priority for the first 100 days, while other Democratic leaders have discussed legislation and war powers resolutions aimed at restricting continued military operations.
A Democratic-controlled Congress could seek to limit military funding, demand greater oversight, and challenge the administration’s authority to continue the conflict. Reuters reported Wednesday that Democrats are expected to use their new congressional majorities to constrain Trump’s foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran.
That prospect raises the possibility that Trump could seek to achieve decisive military objectives against Iran before January, when Democratic lawmakers gain control of congressional committees and legislative priorities.
With fewer than two months remaining before the transfer of congressional power, the administration faces a narrowing political window to pursue its Iran strategy without the additional constraints of a Democratic-controlled Congress.
Meanwhile, Jeffries’ bid positions him to become the first Black Speaker of the House in American history, marking a significant political shift as Republicans prepare for two years of divided government under President Trump.
