Israel, US Condemn Nobel Peace Prize For Navi Pillay Amid ICC Sanctions Dispute

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent

WASHINGTON/JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Israel and the United States have condemned a decision to award this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to South African human rights lawyer Navi Pillay, whose United Nations commission accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, allegations the Jewish state strongly denies.

The controversy intensified Saturday after Pillay, 85, criticized sweeping American sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing them as “unheard of” and “unacceptable.”

Speaking by video link during an event at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, the former ICC judge warned that international courts were facing growing threats to their independence and survival.

“There is so much tension and anxiety over the continued existence of international courts, mainly the International Criminal Court in The Hague,” Pillay said.

“Most importantly, sanctions have been announced by one country against the judges, just for the judicial orders they issue. This is unheard of, unacceptable,” she added.

US SANCTIONS TARGET ICC

Her remarks followed Washington’s announcement Friday of sweeping sanctions against the ICC itself, expanding earlier American measures targeting 17 judges and officials of the Hague-based court.

U.S.Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the decision as necessary to protect American sovereignty, accusing the ICC of seeking to prosecute Americans and exceeding its authority.

The measures restrict transactions involving U.S. entities and the court, potentially disrupting its financial operations. Washington granted a six-month period for winding down certain transactions and exemptions for some activities, allowing time to address American concerns.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the American sanctions, praising President Donald J. Trump and Rubio for what he described as a critical decision.

“The ICC is not a court. It is a political body that poses a mortal threat to law-abiding democracies worldwide and to the very idea of national sovereignty,” Netanyahu wrote on social media platform X.

ISRAEL REJECTS ICC WARRANTS

Israel has strongly opposed the ICC’s arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the war in Gaza.

Israel rejects the allegations and maintains that the court has no jurisdiction over the Jewish state, which, like the United States, is not a party to the Rome Statute establishing the ICC.

However, the ICC maintains that it has jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed in Palestinian territory, including those involving nationals of countries that have not joined the court.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Friday that Pillay would receive the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law.

In explaining its decision, the committee credited her work with helping establish a more comprehensive international legal order.

NOBEL PRIZE SPARKS ANGER

Trump condemned the decision as “disgraceful and embarrassing,” calling it an “indelible stain on the country of Norway.”

Israel also criticized the award, accusing Pillay of bias against the Jewish state because of her previous involvement in United Nations investigations into Israeli military operations and alleged human rights violations.

Netanyahu accused the Nobel Committee of having “lost its moral compass,” while Israel’s Foreign Ministry argued that the decision legitimized anti-Israel prejudice.

The ICC rejected Washington’s sanctions, describing the measures as an assault on the rule of law and the foundations of the international legal order.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called the American decision “a serious blow to our collective pursuit of international criminal justice, of which the ICC is a key pillar.”

INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE DISPUTE

Britain joined Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the Netherlands in expressing regret and strong disagreement with the sanctions.

Washington, however, has accused the ICC of threatening American sovereignty, citing its previous investigation into the conduct of US military personnel in Afghanistan and its arrest warrants targeting Israeli officials.

The Trump administration has not explicitly demanded the withdrawal of those warrants as a condition for lifting the latest sanctions.

Pillay, who previously served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, built her career defending anti-apartheid activists in South Africa before becoming an international judge and prominent human rights advocate.

Her work has included investigations and legal proceedings involving allegations of atrocities in Rwanda, Myanmar and Gaza.

PILLAY’S LONG CAREER

Pillay currently serves as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ principal judicial body, in proceedings concerning allegations of genocide against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority. The ICJ is separate from the International Criminal Court.

She became South Africa’s fifth Nobel Peace Prize laureate, joining figures including former President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Pillay responded to the controversy with humor after the award was announced Friday. “If you clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump,” she joked.

She was referring to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who presented her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal to the American president.

The dispute has widened into a confrontation over international justice, with Washington and Israel challenging the ICC’s authority while European governments and the United Nations warn that sanctions could undermine the court’s ability to investigate atrocities.

For Pillay, whose career began in the struggle against apartheid, the controversy comes as international courts face growing political pressure and questions about their ability to operate independently.
