(Worthy News) – Israel has unveiled a full-scale model of Sky Sonic, a next-generation missile interceptor designed to destroy hypersonic weapons traveling at more than five times the speed of sound, marking another significant development in Israel’s efforts to defend against increasingly sophisticated missile threats from Iran and other adversaries.
Israeli defense manufacturer Rafael Advanced Defense Systems displayed the interceptor at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) exhibition in Washington this week, offering a rare public look at a project that has remained largely secret since its announcement in June 2023.
Unlike conventional ballistic missiles, maneuvering hypersonic weapons can change direction during flight, making them exceptionally difficult to track and intercept. Some travel at speeds exceeding Mach 10, leaving defense systems only seconds to respond.
According to Rafael’s technical documentation, Sky Sonic uses a two-stage design consisting of a powerful booster and a highly maneuverable interception vehicle equipped with advanced targeting technology.
The system is intended to complement Israel’s existing multilayered missile defenses, including Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and the Arrow systems, by addressing threats that conventional interceptors may struggle to defeat.
Iran’s Growing Missile Threat
The unveiling comes amid growing concerns over Iran’s development of advanced ballistic and purported hypersonic missiles.
Tehran has repeatedly claimed breakthroughs in hypersonic weapons technology, while its Houthi allies in Yemen have made similar assertions. However, independent verification of some of these capabilities remains limited.
Rafael first announced Sky Sonic in 2023, shortly after Iran publicized its Fattah missile program. Since then, the Israeli company has disclosed little about the interceptor’s development.
Although the full-scale display represents a public milestone, Rafael has not revealed the results of flight testing or announced when Sky Sonic could become operational.
Approximately 25 Israeli defense companies are participating in the Washington exhibition as Israel seeks to strengthen military cooperation with the United States and expand its defense exports.
Israel’s defense exports reached a record $19.2 billion in 2025, underscoring the country’s growing role in developing advanced military technologies
.
Sky Sonic could eventually provide Israel and its allies with an additional defensive capability against one of the most challenging missile threats emerging on the modern battlefield.
