Israel Sees Historic Election Turnout As Netanyahu Fights For Political Survival

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent

JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Israelis voted in historic numbers Tuesday in parliamentary elections that could end Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s long hold on power, as the Jewish nation faces deep political divisions following years of war, mass protests and mounting questions about the country’s security failures.

Voter turnout reached 74.3 percent by 8 p.m. local time, already surpassing the final turnout of 70.6 percent in the 2022 election, according to Israel’s Central Elections Committee.

The vote marks Israel’s first national election since Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people, including children, and abducting 251 others, triggering a devastating war in Gaza and wider regional conflicts.

Netanyahu, 77, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, faces a major challenge from former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, whose centrist Yashar party is seeking to replace his governing coalition.

Final opinion polls suggested neither Netanyahu’s right-wing and religious allies nor the opposition could easily secure the 61 seats required for a majority in the 120-member Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

NETANYAHU UNDER PRESSURE

The election has become a test of Netanyahu’s leadership following the October 7 attacks, Israel’s subsequent military campaigns against Hamas and Hezbollah, and its confrontation with Iran.

Netanyahu has defended his government’s military record, portraying Israel’s operations against its enemies as essential to national security, while emphasizing his experience in dealing with international leaders.

His opponents have demanded greater accountability for the security failures surrounding the Hamas attacks and criticized his handling of the war and its political consequences.

Eisenkot, who lost his son during fighting in Gaza in December 2023, has called for a change in leadership while promising a firm approach toward Hamas and other security threats.

Former Prime Ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid are also challenging Netanyahu through their B’Yachad, or Together, alliance, adding to a fragmented political contest.

CORRUPTION AND COURT CASES

Netanyahu remains on trial in Israel on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three corruption cases involving allegations of improper dealings with wealthy businessmen and media executives.

He denies wrongdoing and has described the proceedings as politically motivated.

The prime minister also faces an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in The Hague in November 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity connected to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Netanyahu rejects the allegations, while Israel disputes the court’s jurisdiction.

His government’s controversial efforts to overhaul Israel’s judiciary triggered nationwide demonstrations in 2023, with critics warning that the proposed changes would weaken judicial independence and democratic checks on political power.

Netanyahu and his allies have argued that judicial reforms are necessary to restore the balance between elected officials and unelected judges.

OCTOBER 7 QUESTIONS

Yet some of the most painful questions concern the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, which exposed serious failures in Israel’s intelligence and military preparedness.

Families of victims, former hostages and opposition leaders have demanded an independent state commission of inquiry to establish what Israeli political and security officials knew before the assault and why the country was unable to prevent it.

Netanyahu has opposed establishing such a commission through the existing judicial appointment process, arguing that it would be biased against his government. His administration has instead supported an alternative investigative mechanism.

The controversy intensified this month when former Shin Bet domestic intelligence chief Ronen Bar filed a defamation lawsuit against Netanyahu, alleging that he had repeatedly warned the prime minister about the growing threat from Hamas before the attacks.

Netanyahu has challenged Bar’s account and accused the former security chief of failing to alert him about warning signs immediately before the assault, while responsibility for the intelligence and security failures remains fiercely disputed.

MASS PROTESTS

On Saturday, October 24, tens of thousands of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv demanding an independent investigation into the attacks, just three days before the elections.

Organizers estimated that more than 100,000 people attended, although police did not provide an independent crowd estimate.

The demonstration brought together bereaved families, former hostages and opposition politicians, including Netanyahu’s main challenger, Eisenkot.

For many grieving families, the unresolved question is not only how Hamas managed to breach Israel’s defenses, but whether political and military leaders will ever be held accountable for the failures that preceded one of the darkest days in the country’s history.

The continuing dispute has deepened divisions within Israeli society, with Netanyahu’s supporters emphasizing his wartime leadership and opponents arguing that the country needs a new political direction.

ELECTION FRAUD CLAIMS

Tuesday’s voting was also accompanied by allegations of electoral irregularities, including complaints about missing or defaced ballot papers and suspected voter bribery.

Netanyahu accused political opponents of attempting to steal the election and urged his supporters to vote amid reports of high turnout in Arab communities and left-leaning areas.

However, Israel’s Central Elections Committee said it had found no evidence of systematic ballot tampering, while examining individual complaints. Police arrested three operatives associated with the Arab Ra’am party on suspicion of bribing voters.

Police also detained a man carrying a knife near opposition Democrats party leader Yair Golan in Tel Aviv. His party described the incident as an attempted stabbing, but police disputed that characterization.

Authorities sought to maintain orderly voting as long queues formed outside polling stations in several areas, reflecting unusually strong public interest in the election.

ISRAEL’S POLITICAL FUTURE

The outcome is being watched internationally as Israel faces continuing security challenges, strained relations with several countries and questions about its future political direction.

The elections also come amid concerns about Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, religious freedom, the expansion of Jewish settlements and prospects for lasting peace in the Middle East.

Arab citizens, who account for roughly one-fifth of Israel’s population, could play an important role in determining the parliamentary balance, although coalition arrangements remain uncertain.

Polling stations were scheduled to close at 10 p.m. local time Tuesday, when Israeli television networks were expected to publish their first exit polls.

Official vote counting will continue in the coming days, with the final tally expected by October 30 and formal publication scheduled for November 4.

Even if the elections produce a clear parliamentary balance, negotiations over a new governing coalition could take weeks, leaving Netanyahu in office as caretaker prime minister while Israel’s political future is decided.
