(Worthy News) – Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors are expected to meet at the State Department next week to discuss the continued implementation of a U.S.-brokered security framework.
Formal negotiations will resume in Rome in October. A meeting planned for September was postponed because of scheduling conflicts involving the U.N. General Assembly, the Jewish High Holidays and an international conference supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces.
The framework, signed June 26, seeks to restore Lebanese government control in the south while providing Israel with reliable security along its northern border. Israel and Lebanon have held seven rounds of U.S.-mediated talks in recent months.
The central dispute remains Hezbollah. Israel insists the Iranian-backed terrorist organization must be disarmed before Israeli forces fully withdraw. Lebanon is pressing for withdrawal, reconstruction and the return of displaced residents.
Earlier talks produced plans for “pilot zones” where Israel would transfer control to the Lebanese Army. The zones are intended to test whether Lebanese forces can remove Hezbollah fighters, weapons and infrastructure—and prevent the group from returning.
Israel’s concerns were reinforced when the IDF announced the destruction of a Hezbollah tunnel complex beneath the Ali al-Taher Ridge. The military said the network stretched more than two kilometers and contained Iranian-made rockets, drones, anti-tank weapons, mines and a command center.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun visited communities near the area Saturday and pledged support for southern residents. Yet Hezbollah continues to reject direct talks with Israel and refuses demands that it surrender its weapons.
The negotiations offer a narrow path toward lasting peace, but diplomacy will mean little without enforcement. Lebanon cannot reclaim its sovereignty while a foreign-backed armed terrorist organization dictates questions of war and peace, and Israel cannot be expected to withdraw without credible guarantees that its northern communities will be protected.
