(Worthy News) – Israeli police are deploying approximately 22,000 officers ahead of Tuesday’s national elections, preparing for possible unrest if supporters of rival political factions refuse to accept the results of the closely contested vote.
According to The Jerusalem Post, security officials are particularly concerned about what could unfold after exit polls are released at 10 p.m. Tuesday, when competing political camps may take to the streets in celebration or protest.
The security operation represents an increase of approximately 5,000 officers compared with Israel’s previous election.
Police Prepare for Potential Knesset Confrontation
Israeli security authorities have developed a contingency plan known as “Operation Capitol,” modeled on the January 6, 2021, unrest at the U.S. Capitol.
The plan addresses extreme scenarios in which political leaders allege widespread election fraud, supporters attempt to disrupt vote counting, or tens of thousands of demonstrators converge on the Knesset in Jerusalem.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has received a comprehensive security briefing covering potential terrorist threats, civil disturbances, and police readiness. The preparations have involved coordination between Israeli police, the Shin Bet security agency, and the Israel Defense Forces.
Former senior security officials have warned that political polarization, allegations of election manipulation, and the widespread availability of civilian firearms could increase the danger of violent confrontations.
However, officials emphasized that these are precautionary scenarios rather than indications that violence is inevitable.
With Israel preparing to elect its 26th Knesset, authorities are bracing not only for Election Day but also for the potentially contentious coalition negotiations that could follow.
