Iran’s Shadow Oil Fleet Runs Dry as U.S. Blockade Cuts Off Billions in Revenue

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – Iran’s vast network of shadow oil tankers has exhausted its offshore crude reserves after months of a U.S. naval blockade, dealing a devastating financial blow to Tehran and threatening one of the regime’s most important sources of revenue, according to a report Thursday by The Wall Street Journal.

Shipping intelligence firm Kpler confirmed that Iran’s floating oil reserves, primarily stationed near Malaysia and Singapore, were completely depleted by mid-October. The stockpile, which stood at approximately 135 million barrels when the war began in February, had allowed Tehran to continue selling crude to China despite American sanctions and military restrictions.

U.S. Central Command estimates the blockade has deprived Iran of at least $25 billion in oil revenue, severely restricting its ability to rebuild military infrastructure, replace destroyed weapons, and finance its security apparatus.

The financial consequences are significant. Oil exports traditionally account for 30% to 40% of Iranian government revenue, while the Iranian rial has lost roughly one-third of its value against the dollar since July, fueling soaring inflation and worsening economic hardship.

For years, Tehran circumvented Western sanctions through a shadow fleet that transferred Iranian crude between tankers in Southeast Asian waters before delivering shipments to Chinese refineries. However, the renewed American blockade in July prevented Iran from replenishing those offshore reserves, effectively dismantling a critical sanctions-evasion network.

Meanwhile, Chinese refiners are increasingly purchasing oil from alternative suppliers, including Brazil and West Africa, as Iranian shipments disappear from international markets. Other Persian Gulf producers have maintained substantial exports through the Strait of Hormuz under U.S. naval protection.

Despite the mounting economic pressure, Iranian officials insist the regime can withstand the blockade. However, Washington appears determined to use the financial squeeze to force Tehran toward concessions over its nuclear program.

The development marks a potentially decisive turning point in the economic confrontation. While Iran has survived months of military strikes and sanctions, the exhaustion of its offshore oil reserves threatens the financial resources needed to sustain its military capabilities and regional influence.
