Iran’s Exiled Prince Receives Freedom Prize In Germany Amid War Fears And Criticism

(Worthy News) –

TEHRAN/FRANKFURT (Worthy News) – Iranian opposition leader Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran’s last shah, received a prestigious German freedom award on behalf of the Iranian people Saturday amid fears of further military confrontation involving Tehran and criticism of his political ambitions.

Some 20,000 supporters gathered for a rally in Frankfurt, according to police estimates, waving pre-revolutionary Iranian flags and chanting slogans in favor of the former monarchy.

The Freedom Prize was awarded to the Iranian people by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, which is associated with Germany’s liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP), during a ceremony at Frankfurt’s historic St. Paul’s Church.

The award came as tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States remained high, with Washington maintaining its blockade of Iranian ports following months of warfare and inconclusive negotiations over ending the conflict.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced Saturday that it had lifted its self-imposed 2,000-kilometer (1,240-mile) limit on ballistic missile ranges, raising concerns that future Iranian missiles could reach deeper into Europe, beyond Israel and other countries in the Middle East.

IRANIANS SEEK FREEDOM

Pahlavi told the audience that Iran “is a country not waiting to be taught democracy, this is a country being prevented from practicing it.”

“A people ready to die for the right to vote is willing to exercise the right to vote,” he declared to applause.

His speech followed a deadly crackdown on nationwide anti-government protests in January, which rights organizations say killed thousands of demonstrators. Some estimates put the death toll in the tens of thousands, although the full number remains difficult to independently verify.

Pahlavi’s voice quivered as he spoke about relatives of those killed, some of whom attended the ceremony.

“You could not have chosen a people who better understand the meaning of the word ‘freedom,’” he told the foundation.

PRIZE HELD IN TRUST

Pahlavi stressed that he was accepting the award only as a temporary trustee until Iran had a democratically elected government.

“I hold it only temporarily,” he said. “One day I will place it in the hands of its rightful owners, not on foreign soil but in the capital, Tehran.”

Supporters responded with chants of “Long live the shah, long live Iran!” The title shah means king or monarch in Persian and was used by Iran’s rulers before the monarchy was overthrown in 1979.

Pahlavi has offered to lead a transitional administration if Iran’s Islamic Republic collapses but says the country’s future political system should be determined through a democratic referendum rather than automatically restoring the monarchy.

He has also defended military action against Iran’s clerical rulers. In a July interview with Reuters, Pahlavi described the U.S.-Israeli military campaign as a potentially necessary step to prevent further bloodshed by weakening security forces capable of suppressing another uprising. However, he stressed that Iranians, rather than foreign governments, must determine their country’s political future.

CRITICISM OF EXILED PRINCE

Despite the enthusiastic reception in Frankfurt, Pahlavi’s selection provoked objections from Iranian dissidents and German politicians who questioned his legitimacy as a representative of the country’s diverse opposition.

His father, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, ruled Iran as shah until the 1979 revolution, which overthrew the monarchy and eventually brought Shiite Muslim clerics to power under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

The shah’s government was responsible for widespread political repression, including imprisonment and torture by the SAVAK secret police, a legacy that continues to divide Iranian opposition groups.

Critics have accused Reza Pahlavi of failing to distance himself sufficiently from his father’s authoritarian rule and questioned his vocal support for Israel.

Around 200 prisoners held in Iran signed a letter protesting his selection, according to Sahar Sanaie, spokeswoman for the Society for German-Iranians in the German state of Hesse. The letter described him as a symbol of a “bygone dictatorship.”It remained unclear whether the prisoners had signed the statement freely or under pressure, given the restrictions and risks faced by political detainees in Iran.

GERMAN POLITICIANS OBJECT

The Frankfurt branches of Germany’s center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) and environmentalist Greens boycotted the ceremony, arguing that Pahlavi could not claim to represent the Iranian people without a democratic mandate.

Germany’s socialist Left Party also objected to the use of St. Paul’s Church, citing municipal regulations restricting political gatherings at the historic venue.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation defended the award, emphasizing that it recognized the Iranian people’s struggle for democracy and human rights rather than endorsing a particular political leader.

The ceremony took place in a building where Germany’s first elected national parliament convened in 1848 and 1849, giving the occasion particular significance as Iranians debated their country’s political future.

Pahlavi has sought to position himself as a transitional figure capable of uniting monarchists, republicans and other opponents of the Islamic Republic, although deep disagreements remain over his role and the country’s future leadership.

The controversy highlighted tensions within Iran’s divided opposition while the country’s population reportedly faces repression amid threats of renewed military conflict and further bloodshed.
