Iran-Backed Houthis Launch New Strikes on Saudi Airports and Oil Facilities, Threaten Further Attacks

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA (Worthy News) – Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility Wednesday for a new wave of missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia’s airports and critical oil infrastructure, escalating a regional conflict that threatens global energy supplies and could draw the United States into another military confrontation.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group launched ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones toward King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Aramco facilities in Dammam, and an oil refinery near the Saudi capital.

The latest attacks followed a strike Tuesday against Saudi Aramco’s headquarters in Dhahran, where a fire damaged several floors of an administrative building. Saudi officials reported no casualties.

The escalating offensive comes after a devastating Houthi attack Saturday on Riyadh’s international airport killed 13 people and wounded more than 300, disrupting international flights and raising serious concerns about Saudi Arabia’s air defenses.

Saudi forces reported intercepting another ballistic missile over Riyadh Wednesday as the Houthis warned that Saudi airports and energy facilities would remain targets.

The rebels described their attacks as retaliation for Saudi-led military operations in Yemen, where government forces are fighting to reclaim territory controlled by the Iranian-backed movement.

President Donald Trump has warned that Washington could intervene militarily against the Houthis, accusing the group of deliberately attempting to drive up global oil prices ahead of November’s U.S. midterm elections.

The renewed fighting also threatens shipping through the strategically vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major maritime chokepoint connecting the Red Sea with international trade routes.

With Iran’s regional allies continuing their attacks despite months of military pressure, the escalating confrontation underscores the growing danger of a broader Middle East war.

Prophetic and Eschatological Context

Beyond the military dimension, the Houthi campaign carries a religious and eschatological element that Western observers often overlook.

The Houthis emerged from Yemen’s Zaydi Shiite tradition and today operate as part of Iran’s broader “Axis of Resistance.” Their rhetoric is deeply religious, portraying their struggle against Israel, the United States, and increasingly Saudi Arabia as part of a historic confrontation between the forces of Islam and their enemies.

That worldview becomes particularly significant when viewed through Shiite end-times traditions. In classical Shiite eschatology, one of the major signs preceding the appearance of the Mahdi is the rise of a figure known as al-Yamani — “the Yemeni” — who emerges from Yemen and summons people to support the Mahdi. Islamic traditions differ considerably over the details, and the Houthis themselves should not simply be identified with the Yamani prophecy. Nevertheless, Yemen occupies a striking place in Shiite expectations concerning the events preceding the end of the age.

Those traditions also anticipate upheaval across Arabia, conflict surrounding Mecca and Medina, battles involving Syria and Iraq, and ultimately the rise of the Mahdi, whom Shiite Muslims believe will establish Islamic justice throughout the world.

Against that backdrop, the Houthis’ growing confrontation with Saudi Arabia is especially noteworthy. A movement arising from Yemen, aligned with Iran’s revolutionary Shiite regime, is now firing ballistic missiles toward the heart of the Arabian Peninsula while threatening Saudi airports, oil infrastructure, and Red Sea shipping. The Houthis have publicly pledged not to target Islam’s holy cities of Mecca and Medina, even as their attacks increasingly disrupt pilgrims traveling inside the kingdom.

For students of Bible prophecy, this does not mean every missile strike fulfills a specific biblical passage. But it does mean the Middle East is increasingly being shaped by religious movements whose leaders themselves understand history through an end-times lens.

What much of the secular world sees merely as geopolitics, the combatants themselves may see as something far larger — another stage in a divinely ordained struggle moving history toward its appointed conclusion.
