(Worthy News) – Iran-backed Houthi forces pressed deeper into strategic areas of Yemen this week, seeking control of mountain positions that could secure their recent gains along the Red Sea and further weaken the country’s Saudi-supported government.

The latest fighting has centered on the Kahboub Mountains in the provinces of Taiz and Lahj. The rugged high ground separates Houthi-held coastal territory from government-controlled areas in southern Yemen, including the government’s base in Aden.

Five Yemeni military sources told Reuters that battles were underway near the remote Al-Wazi’iyah district and around Ras al-Ara, between the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Aden.

The Houthis seized the port city of Mokha and key positions along Yemen’s western coast during a rapid offensive earlier this month. Their advance routed government-aligned forces and gave the group greater leverage over the Bab el-Mandeb, the narrow passage connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

Roughly 12 percent of world trade ordinarily passes through the waterway, according to the Associated Press.

The Houthis are now trying to turn a sudden breakthrough into lasting control. Holding the surrounding mountains would make it harder for Saudi-backed forces to organize a counteroffensive and could leave the rebels in a stronger position to threaten shipping.

Trump Reportedly Pulls Back From Strikes

The Houthi advance came as President Trump reportedly decided against launching U.S. airstrikes on the group.

According to accounts cited by Reuters, the administration had prepared for military action after renewed appeals from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Target lists had reportedly been approved and bombs were being loaded onto aircraft when the mission was halted.

Reuters said it could not independently verify that account. U.S. Central Command referred questions to the White House, which had not publicly commented.

Two American officials separately told Axios that Trump considered military action before deciding to hold back. The administration had previously offered Saudi Arabia intelligence and targeting support while resisting direct entry into another front of the widening regional war.

Rashid al-Alimi, who leads Yemen’s internationally recognized government from Riyadh, also appealed to Trump for military assistance, according to four sources who spoke with Reuters. Trump reportedly made no firm commitment during the call.

The decision reflects a difficult calculation for Washington. Saudi Arabia is a longstanding American security partner, but a U.S. attack could provoke the Houthis to expand their operations against international shipping and draw American forces deeper into Yemen’s long and costly war.

Houthi political official Mohamed al-Bukhaiti told the Associated Press that the group had assured Washington it would not attack American vessels in the Red Sea. He said Saudi-linked shipping remained the exception and warned other nations against entering the conflict on Riyadh’s side.

Britain has nevertheless agreed to provide limited aerial-refueling support for Saudi aircraft flying what London described as defensive missions. The deployment is expected to last several weeks and will be reviewed as the conflict develops.

Missiles, Oil Routes and Civilian Suffering

The ground offensive has been accompanied by missile and drone attacks inside Saudi Arabia.

Saudi authorities said they intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh on Saturday. The kingdom also reported attempted attacks against infrastructure in Yanbu, Taif, Baysh and Farasan. The Houthis claimed they struck sensitive sites in Riyadh and Saudi Aramco facilities, but provided no evidence for several of those claims.

The growing pressure on Yanbu carries global consequences. Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline moves oil from fields near the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea, allowing exports to avoid the Strait of Hormuz. If Iranian forces threaten Hormuz while the Houthis endanger the Bab el-Mandeb, Tehran and its regional allies could apply pressure to both ends of the Arabian Peninsula.

The human cost is already severe. United Nations figures cited by Reuters indicate that nearly 700 people have been killed and thousands injured during the latest fighting. Almost 130,000 Yemenis have fled their homes, while more than 3,000 have crossed the Red Sea by boat into Africa.

The Houthi-run Health Ministry said at least six people, including two children and a woman, were killed Tuesday in airstrikes on Mokha. Hours earlier, Yemen’s internationally recognized government accused the Houthis of attacking a public market in Lahj. The competing battlefield accounts could not be independently verified, according to the Associated Press.

Once again, Yemeni families are paying the price for decisions made by armed factions and regional powers. Many of those escaping the front have little food, shelter, or medical care in a country already devastated by more than a decade of war.

Yemen’s Place in Islamic End-Times Expectations

The offensive also carries a spiritual dimension that should be considered carefully, without mistaking interpretation for established motive.

As Worthy News previously reported, Yemen appears prominently in some Islamic end-times traditions.

Twelver Shiite teaching anticipates the appearance of the Mahdi, a hidden imam expected to emerge in the last days and establish justice. Among the recurring signs in that tradition is the appearance of a figure known as the Yamani, who arises from Yemen and calls people to support the Mahdi. Other traditions place the Mahdi’s appearance in Mecca and describe an opposing army being swallowed in the desert between Mecca and Medina.

These themes are documented in scholarly treatments of Twelver Shiite beliefs. They can give territorial victories in Yemen—and confrontation near Islam’s holiest places—meaning far beyond ordinary military strategy for those already inclined to view history through an apocalyptic lens.

Yet the distinction is essential: The Houthis emerged from Yemen’s Zaydi tradition, not Iran’s Twelver Shiism. Although years of Iranian support have brought the movement closer to Tehran politically and ideologically, the two religious systems are not identical.

No verified evidence shows that Houthi leaders launched the current offensive to fulfill the Yamani tradition or prepare for the Mahdi. The immediate objectives are plainly military and political: control strategic territory, weaken the Saudi-backed government, and gain leverage over vital shipping lanes.

Still, religious expectations can influence how wars are understood, justified, and prolonged. If fighters or supporters begin to see military success as confirmation of a sacred role, compromise becomes harder and escalation easier to defend.

For Christians, the right response is neither sensationalism nor indifference. Believers are called to remain watchful, discerning and prayerful — testing claims carefully, refusing to turn speculation into certainty, and remembering the civilians trapped beneath the ambitions of rulers and armies.

The battle for Yemen’s mountains may appear far removed from daily life elsewhere. Yet its consequences reach the world’s oil markets, two strategic waterways and a region where military power, religious expectation and ancient rivalries are once again converging.
