Attack threatens one of the world’s most important alternative oil routes as Iran-backed Houthis tighten their grip on Red Sea shipping

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA (Worthy News) – A reported Houthi attack has struck Saudi Arabia’s strategically vital East-West oil pipeline, the massive cross-country system designed to keep Saudi crude flowing even when the Strait of Hormuz is threatened or closed.

Satellite imagery verified by Reuters showed black smoke Thursday rising near the pipeline south of Medina. Saudi authorities had not publicly confirmed the cause of the fire as of Friday, but The Wall Street Journal reported that the pipeline had been hit and shut down amid the widening confrontation with Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militants.

The roughly 1,200-kilometer East-West pipeline, also known as Petroline, carries crude from Saudi Arabia’s oil-producing eastern region across the kingdom to the Red Sea port of Yanbu. Saudi Aramco says the system can carry roughly 7 million barrels of crude per day, making it one of Riyadh’s most important strategic assets for bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

That role has become critical during the current Iran conflict. With traffic through Hormuz sharply reduced, Saudi Arabia has increasingly moved crude westward through the pipeline and loaded tankers at Yanbu instead. Reuters reported this week that crude and condensate loadings from Yanbu had climbed sharply in early September as the kingdom attempted to compensate for disruptions in the Persian Gulf.

The pipeline has already been in the Houthis’ sights. On July 27, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group had attacked sensitive oil-supply and transportation sites connecting eastern Saudi Arabia with Yanbu using drones. The Houthis later declared a blockade against Saudi shipping in the Red Sea as fighting between Riyadh and the Iranian-backed movement escalated.

Pressure From Both Sides of the Arabian Peninsula

The latest development carries consequences far beyond Saudi Arabia.

Iran has severely disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, historically one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints. Saudi Arabia’s answer was to move oil west through Petroline and export it through the Red Sea.

Now the Houthis are threatening that route as well.

Houthi forces this week seized the strategic Yemeni port of Mocha and advanced onto Perim Island and the nearby coast overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the narrow gateway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. The advances could give forces aligned with Tehran greater leverage over both ends of the Arabian Peninsula’s major maritime oil routes.

The escalating pressure is already being felt in global energy markets. Brent crude has traded above $100 a barrel, while the International Energy Agency said Saudi crude supply fell to roughly 6 million barrels per day in August — its lowest level in more than three decades — as attacks and shipping disruptions constrained exports.

For Saudi Arabia and world energy markets, the danger is increasingly clear: the infrastructure built to escape disruption in the Strait of Hormuz is itself becoming a battlefield.

Why Yemen Figures in End-Times Expectations

In Twelver Shiite traditions, the Mahdi is the awaited Hidden Imam who will return to establish justice. Some accounts identify a figure called the Yamani, who appears in Yemen and calls people to support him, as one of the signs preceding his arrival.

These traditions describe a Yemeni forerunner; however, they do not establish that the Mahdi himself comes from Yemen. Mecca features in accounts of the Mahdi’s appearance, while other traditions describe an enemy army being swallowed in the desert between Mecca and Medina.

Some early Shiite accounts also portray the Mahdi’s mission as restoring Islam after its corruption and avenging wrongs committed against Muhammad’s family. That provides a basis for discussing religious restoration and sectarian grievance.  Some Shiites claim that Sunnis have corrupted Islam, and the current Yemeni campaign is to “purify Mecca and Medina” as part of their eschatological worldview.

A Possible Interpretation, Not an Established Motive

The Houthis emerged from Yemen’s Zaydi tradition, which differs from Iran’s dominant Twelver Shiism. Their movement combines religious revivalism, nationalism, and elements borrowed from Iran’s revolutionary ideology. Those connections do not make the two traditions interchangeable.

For militants or sympathizers already looking for signs of the Mahdi’s return, Houthi territorial gains could be interpreted as evidence that deliverance is drawing closer. That is a possible reading of events—not a documented explanation for this offensive. The reporting reviewed here does not establish that Houthi leaders have linked the Mokha advance to the Yamani traditions.

Still, the possibility matters. If battlefield success becomes proof of a sacred mission in the minds of those fighting, compromise may become harder and further confrontation easier to justify.

The human stakes are already grave. Yemen’s ceasefire, in place since 2022, is buckling, threatening a population that has endured years of war and deprivation. AP reports that the earlier conflict killed 150,000 people and pushed many others toward famine.
