Houthi Missile Strike Kills 12 at Saudi Airport, Injures More Than 300 as Trump Weighs Military Response

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA (Worthy News) – Iran-backed Houthi militants launched a devastating missile attack Saturday against King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia’s capital, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 300, as the widening Middle East conflict threatens to draw the United States into another confrontation with Tehran’s regional allies.

The strike, the third attack on the airport this week, severely damaged passenger facilities, forced the suspension of flights, and overwhelmed nearby hospitals as emergency crews rushed victims to medical centers.

According to The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, the missile struck an airport complex housing Terminals 3 and 4, causing extensive structural damage, including portions of the roof collapsing.

Saudi aviation authorities reported 309 injuries, some critical. Among those killed were four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshis, and nationals of the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and Egypt.

The Saudi-led military coalition blamed the Houthis, describing the attack as a war crime and promising a forceful response.

Trump Considers U.S. Military Intervention

President Donald Trump indicated Saturday that Washington could join Saudi military operations against the Houthis following the deadly strike.

“We may. We’re going to look at it,” Trump told reporters, adding that a decision could come quickly.

The escalation follows a renewed Saudi-led military offensive against Houthi positions in Yemen, where government forces have been attempting to reverse rebel advances near the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping corridor connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

Earlier Houthi attacks this week killed four people at Riyadh’s airport and damaged commercial aircraft. The militants have also targeted Saudi oil infrastructure and other aviation facilities, warning international airlines against operating in Saudi airspace.

Iran’s Regional Strategy Threatens Saudi Economic Ambitions

The renewed Houthi offensive comes as Iran faces mounting military and economic pressure from the United States and Israel.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Tehran and its Houthi allies have intensified attacks against Gulf energy infrastructure, maritime shipping, and Saudi aviation, raising concerns about oil prices and regional stability.

The attacks also threaten Saudi Arabia’s efforts to establish Riyadh as a global financial and investment center.

The kingdom is preparing to host major international energy and investment conferences this month, drawing executives from some of the world’s largest corporations.

Repeated strikes against its principal international airport could undermine investor confidence while exposing vulnerabilities in Saudi Arabia’s missile-defense network.

For Iran, the Houthis provide another means of pressuring Washington and its regional partners without requiring Tehran to engage directly in a full-scale military confrontation.

Islamic End-Times Expectations Surround Yemen

The advance of Houthi warfare toward Mecca and Medina carries an unusual religious dimension, particularly when viewed against Islamic end-times traditions previously examined by Worthy News.

In Twelver Shiite eschatology, the appearance of the Mahdi—a messianic leader expected to emerge in the last days—is preceded by several signs. Among them is the appearance of a figure known as the Yamani, who arises from Yemen and calls people to support the Mahdi. Other traditions place the Mahdi’s appearance in Mecca and describe an opposing army being swallowed by the earth in the desert between Mecca and Medina.

As Worthy News has previously emphasized, the Houthis emerged from Yemen’s Zaydi Shiite tradition, which is distinct from Iran’s Twelver Shiism. Although the Houthis have developed a close military and ideological relationship with Tehran, there is no verified evidence that their present offensive is being conducted specifically to fulfill these end-times traditions.

Nevertheless, the geography is striking. Within weeks, Saudi Arabia has accused the Houthis of threatening Mecca and now attacking infrastructure supplying Medina—the two cities at the center of Islam’s holiest territory.

For Christians watching the rapidly changing Middle East, these developments are another reminder to remain watchful without turning speculation into certainty. The convergence of warfare, ancient religious expectations and struggles over the region’s holiest places deserves careful attention as events continue to unfold.
