(Worthy News) – France has imposed emergency curfews across several major cities following a weekend of widespread rioting, arson, and looting that overwhelmed police forces, damaged thousands of businesses, and left authorities scrambling to restore order.
The violence erupted during nationwide demonstrations over soaring living costs, deteriorating public services, and worsening conditions in French schools. What began as student-led protests escalated into some of the country’s worst civil unrest in years, with masked rioters setting vehicles ablaze, attacking public buildings, and ransacking businesses in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and other cities.
According to Reuters and the Associated Press, approximately 2,500 people have been arrested, nearly 1,000 police officers injured, and an estimated 3,000 businesses damaged or looted. Authorities have also reported one protest-related death.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu ordered localized nighttime curfews, including restrictions around Paris’s Place de la République and Les Halles shopping district. Lyon imposed a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, while additional restrictions were introduced in Lille, Nice, and other municipalities.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged that police had lost control of parts of several cities during the violence and offered his resignation. President Emmanuel Macron rejected the offer but demanded an investigation into security failures and improvements in policing.
The unrest has intensified France’s political crisis ahead of presidential elections scheduled for spring 2027. Opposition leaders have criticized the government’s inability to maintain public order, while authorities have blamed far-left agitators and organized looters for much of the destruction.
Although the curfews brought relative calm Monday night, the crisis may be far from over. Student organizations and Yellow Vest activists have called for renewed demonstrations Saturday, prompting Lecornu to promise a massive security deployment.
The turmoil underscores growing instability across France, where economic hardship, political polarization, and declining confidence in government institutions are fueling fears of further unrest.
