Federal Judge Orders Iowa to Allow Satanic Holiday Celebration Inside State Capitol

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – A federal judge has ordered Iowa officials to permit The Satanic Temple to hold a controversial holiday celebration inside the State Capitol, rejecting years of opposition from Republican leaders who argued that the event’s satanic imagery and activities were inappropriate for children.

Chief U.S. District Judge Stephanie M. Rose issued a preliminary injunction Monday, ruling that the state likely violated the organization’s First Amendment rights by repeatedly denying its applications to hold holiday events in the Capitol rotunda.

The December 12 celebration is expected to feature satanic-themed caroling, children’s coloring activities, ornament-making, and costumes depicting Krampus, a horned demonic figure from European folklore traditionally associated with punishing misbehaving children.

Iowa officials had opposed the gathering, citing concerns about frightening children and costume accessories resembling weapons. However, Rose ruled that such objections did not justify excluding the organization from a public venue available to other religious groups.

The controversy dates to December 2023, when The Satanic Temple installed a display featuring Baphomet, a goat-headed occult figure, inside the Capitol alongside traditional Christmas decorations. The display sparked widespread outrage among Christians and was subsequently vandalized.

Republican officials continued resisting the organization’s holiday activities, prompting The Satanic Temple and the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa to file a federal lawsuit in August.

The Satanic Temple describes itself as a non-theistic religious organization that does not literally worship Satan, although its use of satanic symbolism has generated strong opposition from Christian conservatives.

The ruling represents another flashpoint in the national debate over religious liberty, the boundaries of First Amendment protections, and the display of religious and occult symbols in government buildings.

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird’s office confirmed that state officials intend to appeal the decision. The preliminary injunction allows the December event to proceed but does not resolve the underlying lawsuit.
