Farage Aides Step Down After Foreign Funding Allegations Hit Reform UK (Worthy News In-Depth)

LONDON (Worthy News) – Two senior aides to Nigel Farage, the populist Reform UK leader and close ally of U.S. President Donald J. Trump, have stepped down after an undercover investigation alleged the party sought to circumvent British electoral law by arranging for a foreign donor to fund political polling.

Reform UK denied wrongdoing and said it had been targeted in what Farage described as a hoax by climate activists, while Britain’s governing Labour Party asked police to examine possible criminal offenses.

The controversy erupted after Britain’s Channel 4 broadcast an investigation alleging that senior Reform figures arranged for a U.S. company to pay more than 30,000 pounds ($40,000) for three opinion polls commissioned by the party.

British electoral law prohibits political parties from accepting donations from impermissible foreign donors, raising questions over whether the polling constituted an undeclared benefit to Reform.

The undercover operation was conducted by Verbatim, an investigative group founded by journalists from the Centre for Climate Reporting, whose team posed as wealthy potential donors from the United States with British connections.

AIDES STEP DOWN

Reform said its head of policy, James Orr, and Farage’s longtime adviser Dan Jukes had stepped down from their positions pending the outcome of an internal inquiry.

The revelations emerged as Reform opened its annual conference in Birmingham, where Farage had hoped to refocus attention on the party’s policies and ambitions to form Britain’s next government.

Channel 4 said undercover footage showed discussions about how a potential 500,000-pound ($675,000) donation from a U.S. financier might be channeled through his British-based son. The supposed father was an actor and the son an undercover journalist, and the proposed donation was never made.

Farage was present during one secretly recorded lunch involving the supposed donors but denied that he or Reform had broken the law.

“The party has broken no laws. The party has not taken any dodgy money or anything like that whatsoever,” Farage told Britain’s LBC radio.

POLICE ASKED TO ACT

Labour wrote to police asking them to examine possible criminal offenses, including claims that party officials discussed channeling overseas money through a British intermediary.

Police said they were aware of the claims and would assess information provided to them, while the Electoral Commission, which regulates political finance in Britain, said it was considering the material and was in contact with police.

That did not amount to the formal launch of a police investigation, and Reform strongly rejected suggestions that it had accepted illegal foreign funding.

Orr, a Cambridge University academic and friend of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, also denied wrongdoing, saying Reform had not commissioned the polling at the center of the controversy.

“It wasn’t internal party polling. It wasn’t Reform UK’s poll,” Orr said, arguing that the surveys were independently funded and subsequently made public.

PRESSURE ON FARAGE

The dispute adds to pressure on Farage, 62, a leading campaigner for Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union who has transformed Reform UK into a major force in British politics.

Farage is separately facing parliamentary scrutiny over a 5 million-pound ($6.8 million) donation from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne in 2024. Farage denies wrongdoing and maintains that the money was a personal gift that did not require declaration.

The latest controversy comes at a politically sensitive moment for Prime Minister Andy Burnham, whose Labour Party has regained ground against Reform after the populist party previously established a commanding lead in opinion polls.

Reform led British opinion polls for much of the previous two years, but Labour’s fortunes improved after Burnham replaced Keir Starmer as prime minister in July, leaving the two parties increasingly competitive.

Analysts say the funding controversy could further damage Reform’s efforts to convince voters that it is ready to govern, potentially easing some of the political pressure on Burnham and Labour ahead of Britain’s next general election.

ELECTION IMPACT

Keiran Pedley, director of U.K. politics at pollster Ipsos, said the allegations may prompt voters to question whether Reform was ready for government, adding that the issue was “cutting through.”

However, Reform retains substantial support and remains a major challenger to Labour, despite holding only eight of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.

The party has grown rapidly since being founded as the Brexit Party in 2018 and later renamed Reform UK, building support around immigration, opposition to the political establishment and other issues.

Its advances in local elections earlier this year contributed to pressure on Labour that eventually preceded Starmer’s departure and Burnham’s rise to the premiership.

Britain’s next general election is not due until 2029, though analysts say it could come earlier if Burnham decides to seek a new mandate from voters.
