Ethiopian Airlines Flight To Israel Turned Back Over Indonesian Pilot

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent

JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – An Ethiopian Airlines cargo flight bound for Israel was forced to return to Ethiopia after Israeli security authorities discovered that one of its pilots was Indonesian, Israeli media reported.

The aircraft was ordered to turn around overnight Sunday into Monday while still flying through Ethiopian airspace, according to Israel’s Channel 12 television news service, known as N12.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, has no diplomatic relations with Israel, and Indonesian nationals are reportedly barred from serving on flights entering the country under tightened Israeli aviation security restrictions.

According to Israeli media, the aircraft had already departed Addis Ababa when its crew list reached Israeli authorities, who discovered the pilot’s nationality and refused permission for the aircraft to enter Israeli airspace.

The plane returned to Ethiopia, reportedly dumping fuel over the sea before landing in Addis Ababa, where the Indonesian pilot was replaced. The aircraft subsequently departed again and landed safely in Israel. Ethiopian Airlines maintained that it had been unaware of the restriction affecting the pilot.

AVIATION CONCERNS

The incident followed a September 30 attempted hijacking involving a flydubai passenger flight traveling from Dubai to Israel, in which an Omani co-pilot attacked the captain and allegedly attempted to crash the aircraft into Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.

United Arab Emirates prosecutors have described the incident as a planned terrorist attack, although their conclusions have not been independently established and investigations have continued.

The attack raised serious questions about aviation security procedures, particularly the screening of flight crews operating routes to Israel amid heightened regional tensions.

Israeli media reported that more than 1,200 aviation crew members from countries without diplomatic relations with Israel, including Iran, may previously have entered the Jewish state, citing information presented to a parliamentary intelligence subcommittee.

Following the flydubai incident, Israeli authorities tightened restrictions on foreign airlines, requiring them to ensure that pilots and other crew members from countries without diplomatic relations with Israel are not assigned to flights entering Israeli airspace.

REPORTED HIJACKING ATTEMPT

United Arab Emirates prosecutors said the September 30 incident involved an Omani co-pilot who attacked the captain with an emergency axe while the aircraft was carrying 174 passengers and crew members.

Authorities said the suspect had intended to crash the aircraft into Israel’s main international airport in an attack inspired by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.

Despite suffering injuries, the captain managed to alert others aboard, allowing passengers and crew members to overpower the suspect. The aircraft was diverted and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, with assistance from two additional pilots.

UAE prosecutors said the suspect had passed professional and security checks before joining flydubai.

Their findings intensified concerns about the effectiveness of aviation security screening, while the criminal investigation continued.

INDONESIA’S POSITION

The Ethiopian Airlines incident, however, involved no reported attempt to seize the aircraft or harm passengers. The concern cited by Israeli media was the Indonesian pilot’s nationality rather than any allegation of wrongdoing by the individual.

Indonesia has long refused to establish diplomatic relations with Israel, maintaining that normalization should be linked to recognition of Palestinian statehood and a negotiated settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The country, home to more than 280 million people, has frequently condemned Israeli military operations in Gaza and supported Palestinian diplomatic initiatives internationally.

Tensions also increased in May when Israeli forces detained nine Indonesian nationals participating in a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza, including two journalists.

Indonesia’s leading Muslim clerical organization, the Indonesian Ulema Council, condemned their detention as a kidnapping and demanded action to secure their release.

CHRISTIANS PRAY

Yet Indonesia’s official position does not reflect the views of all its citizens, including members of its substantial Christian minority.

Indonesian Christians have told Worthy News that they regret their government’s refusal to establish diplomatic relations with Israel and continue praying for the Jewish nation.

Their views highlight religious and political differences within Indonesia, where Christians form a minority in a predominantly Muslim society and some evangelical congregations maintain strong spiritual connections with Israel.

For these believers, support for Israel is rooted partly in their understanding of the Bible and the historical relationship between Christianity and the Jewish people.

The latest aviation incident has again highlighted the divide between Indonesia’s official diplomatic position and the views of citizens who favor closer relations with Israel, while underscoring the security challenges facing international airlines operating flights to the Jewish state.
