Dutch Bible Teacher Ab Klein Haneveld Dies At 81 After Terminal Cancer Diagnosis

SNEEK, NETHERLANDS (Worthy News) – Ab Klein Haneveld, the Dutch Bible teacher and gospel musician whose dedication to Scripture influenced generations of Christians in the Netherlands and beyond, has died after being diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, his Bible study organization confirmed.

The Netherlands Bible Study Center (NBC) said the 81-year-old evangelist “was called home by the Lord he faithfully served throughout his life.”

His death on Thursday, October 15, followed his hospitalization last week with several health problems. Doctors subsequently diagnosed pancreatic cancer that had spread to other parts of his body, the NBC said.

“Unfortunately, this could no longer be treated,” the NBC board said in a statement to Worthy News. “However, as Christians, we know where he is: with the Lord Jesus Christ.”

The organization announced that all scheduled Bible studies and related activities had been canceled.

FAMILY, FRIENDS SHOCKED

The news came as a shock to many who knew Klein Haneveld through his decades of Bible teaching, preaching and gospel music.

Born in 1945, Klein Haneveld grew up in a family closely associated with Bible teaching and evangelism. His father, Jacob Klein Haneveld (1918–1988), became known for his evangelistic work, including tent meetings that began in the years following World War II.

Following in that tradition, Ab Klein Haneveld devoted much of his adult life to explaining the Bible through lectures, conferences and study meetings across the Netherlands and beyond.

He established the Netherlands Bible Study Center in the early 1980s, through which thousands of recorded Bible lectures have been made available to listeners.

Klein Haneveld developed a reputation for detailed, Scripture-centered teaching, frequently emphasizing the importance of interpreting biblical passages within their historical and prophetic contexts.

BIBLE TEACHING LEGACY

His lectures covered subjects ranging from the creation account in Genesis to the history of Israel, the teachings of the apostle Paul, the future of the Church and biblical prophecies concerning the end times.

He also organized extensive Bible study trips to Israel and other Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt and Jordan, as well as Britain, France, and Italy, allowing participants to explore the historical and geographical roots of the Bible and deepen their understanding of Scripture.

His teachings included dispensational theology, which distinguishes different periods in God’s dealings with humanity and places particular emphasis on the continuing significance of Israel in biblical prophecy.

Klein Haneveld also embraced the idea that an unspecified period of time separates Genesis 1:1, describing God’s original creation of the heavens and the Earth, from Genesis 1:2, which describes the Earth as formless and empty.

Citing Bible verses, Klein Haneveld argued that the original creation had subsequently come under divine judgment. This interpretation, commonly associated with the gap theory, differs from readings that treat the opening verses of Genesis as a continuous account of creation.

THEOLOGICAL DISAGREEMENTS

Klein Haneveld’s teachings also extended to subjects such as the biblical account of Babel, the Antichrist and unconventional interpretations of the physical world, including ideas associated with the hollow Earth theory and the centrality of Christ in creation.

His treatment of such subjects reflected his interest in interpretations of biblical history, prophecy and the nature of creation that sometimes differed from conventional Christian teachings. “The Bible isn’t three-dimensional but at least four-dimensional,” he once said.

He criticized mainstream churches for placing too much emphasis on dogmas and religious rituals rather than faithfully following the Bible, which he regarded as God’s Word, and cultivating a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

“Religion is like looking for a needle in a haystack,” he often said.

At times, theological disagreements led to open confrontations.

FAITH OVER POPULARITY

During one Christmas gathering, a pastor angrily brought the meeting to an end after Klein Haneveld suggested that Christians should not focus exclusively on the infant Jesus but recognize Him as the resurrected Lord and Savior. On another occasion, a fellow organizer stormed out of an NBC conference in Wuppertal, Germany. Both incidents were witnessed by a Worthy News reporter.

Yet Klein Haneveld maintained that remaining faithful to God’s Word was more important to him than winning a popularity contest.

Many appeared to agree, as Klein Haneveld retained a substantial following through his extensive collection of recorded Bible studies and public speaking engagements. Several of his teachings were also broadcast on local radio stations in the Netherlands.

He also led annual Bible study conferences in Wuppertal, Germany, drawing Dutch participants who traveled from across the Netherlands to hear his teachings.

Yet the down-to-earth preacher appeared remarkably unimpressed by his own popularity.

PREACHER’S HUMOR AND MODESTY

“Do you understand why people come to this conference?” he once asked a Worthy News reporter who had known him since childhood.

“I would never come, because I always want to have something to do,” Klein Haneveld added, reflecting his restless personality and dry sense of humor.

Unlike some of his American preaching counterparts, Klein Haneveld lived relatively modestly, without the lavish lifestyle associated with certain high-profile televangelists.

He once told Worthy News how he had paid for groceries using coins collected during his Bible study meetings.

“You have so many coins,” he recalled a cashier telling him. “Yes, that is inherent in my profession,” he remembered replying.

GOSPEL MUSIC LEGACY

His work was also distinguished by a lifelong interest in music, including country and gospel performances associated with the NBCountry Band.

Klein Haneveld was also involved with Bible Believing Christians (BBC), a gospel group formed in the 1960s and led by his longtime friend Johan Th. Bos, a songwriter, author, journalist, and Netherlands-based contributor to Worthy News.

“This is very sad news,” said Bos, who had also translated Klein Haneveld’s Bible teachings into gospel songs.

The group recorded several albums, initially released on vinyl, with Klein Haneveld playing several instruments, including the vibraphone and saxophone.

The combination of Bible teaching and music helped him reach audiences beyond conventional church settings, continuing a family tradition of evangelism through public gatherings and personal encounters.

FAMILY AND PERSONAL LIFE

His musical activities formed another dimension of a career more widely associated with extensive Bible lectures and public preaching.

Klein Haneveld experienced personal loss when his second wife died on August 9, 2022. He subsequently recalled that nearly 500 people attended her farewell gathering, reflecting the relationships built over many years.

He leaves behind a family that includes children from his first marriage, alongside other relatives, friends and loved ones who shared different stages of his life.

Even in his later years, he remained active in evangelism and public Bible teaching, traveling by motorcycle to tent meetings as recently as June 2026.

Those journeys echoed the work of his father, whose evangelistic tent meetings began in 1946 and helped establish a family legacy of sharing the Christian message.

REMEMBERING HIS LEGACY

For decades, Klein Haneveld emphasized the authority of Scripture and the importance of personal faith in Jesus Christ, themes that remained central to his teaching and music.

His sudden deterioration brought an abrupt halt to a demanding schedule of teaching and travel that continued well into his eighties.

His death also raised questions about the future of the Bible study organization he founded and the continuation of his teaching activities.

On Thursday, his family, friends and generations of listeners mourned and remembered a man whose public work spanned decades and whose recorded teachings continue to reach audiences.

Klein Haneveld’s recorded Bible teachings and gospel music leave a lasting spiritual legacy that has influenced generations of Christians in the Netherlands and beyond, an NBC board member told Worthy News.
