(Worthy News) – As President Donald Trump presses Chinese leader Xi Jinping over trade, security and Iran, customs records analyzed by The Wall Street Journal show Chinese suppliers sent roughly 1,300 shipments of dual-use components to Iran’s Defense Ministry during the first half of 2026—an expanding air-cargo pipeline that raises serious questions about Beijing’s conduct.
The shipments offer a sobering picture of how Tehran may be keeping its drone program alive despite American sanctions and mounting pressure on its conventional trade routes.
The reported cargo included GPS tracking devices, electric motors, aircraft-engine components and other electronics with both civilian and military applications. Some of those parts are known to be used in Iran’s Shahed drones, weapons that have changed modern warfare by giving hostile regimes a relatively inexpensive way to strike cities, military installations and civilian infrastructure.
The records do not establish that every component was placed inside a weapon. Nor do they prove that every Chinese exporter was acting at the direction of Beijing. But the destination, volume, and timing of the deliveries make them difficult to dismiss as ordinary commerce.
An Air Bridge to Tehran
The flow of equipment accelerated as restrictions disrupted Iran’s maritime trade, according to the Journal’s investigation.
Mahan Air, the U.S.-sanctioned Iranian carrier long accused by Washington of transporting weapons, money and personnel for the regime, expanded its flights from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou to Tehran. Flight-tracking data cited in subsequent coverage showed the airline increasing its China-Iran schedule from approximately four flights a week in early March to about 27 a week by late April.
That expanding air bridge appears to have given Tehran another means of obtaining the small but essential parts needed to manufacture drones and maintain missile systems.
One of the most troubling deliveries reportedly arrived on June 17—the same day the United States and Iran agreed to a temporary truce and China publicly emphasized its role in calming the conflict.
The aircraft carried electronics consigned to Iran’s Defense Ministry that could be used in drones and missile-guidance systems. Two days later, more than a dozen additional shipments arrived with over $6 million in drone-capable components.
The contrast is hard to ignore. Beijing was presenting itself as a peacemaker while commerce originating inside China was reportedly helping replenish the arsenal of a regime at war with the United States.
