China Interrogates Christian Schoolchildren Amid Church Crackdown

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent

BEIJING (Worthy News) – Chinese authorities have interrogated Christian schoolchildren, including first graders, for hours and pressured them to sign statements accusing their churches of religious “brainwashing,” Christian rights activists confirmed Friday.

The interrogations in China’s central Hunan province are part of an expanding crackdown on unregistered Protestant congregations that has also led to the suspension of Christian educators, according to the advocacy organization ChinaAid.

Some children were questioned for three to four hours by police officers and pressured to provide information about their churches, the group reported, citing local Christians.

In one case, an elementary-school-aged boy broke down in tears after officers demanded that he sign a document criticizing his church. “I don’t know anything. I want to go home. I won’t sign. Don’t force me,” the child pleaded, according to Christians familiar with the incident.

CHRISTIAN CHILDREN QUESTIONED

ChinaAid said police visited several primary and secondary schools in Yueyang, where children from Christian families were questioned individually. Some signed statements accusing their churches of religious indoctrination, while others refused.

The youngest child questioned was a first grader, according to local Christians, raising concerns among families about the psychological impact of the interrogations.

At the Hunan Institute of Technology, a female instructor was suspended from teaching duties and placed on standby status, local Christians cited by ChinaAid explained. Another educator, identified by the surname Zhou, faced similar disciplinary action after requesting to withdraw from the ruling Chinese Communist Party because of his Christian faith.

At Yueyang No. 1 Secondary School, the school’s Communist Party secretary questioned a teacher about attending a Bible study group organized by detained church elder Yang Jianjun, ChinaAid reported. When the educator defended his right to study Scripture, officials warned that state security authorities would investigate him, according to Christians familiar with the incident.

CHURCH LEADERS DETAINED

The school interrogations followed coordinated police raids on several unregistered churches in Yueyang on July 11, when numerous believers, including children and teenagers, were taken into custody for questioning, said Christian activists.

ChinaAid reported that six church leaders and workers remained detained as of late September. Three faced allegations of “illegal use of information networks” after authorities transferred them from administrative to criminal detention, according to local Christians.

Those detained included Pastor Huang Lei, Elder Yang Jianjun and preacher Hu Hongtao, along with Pastor Luo Kaimin and two other church members, Christian activists reported.

During the July raids, police collected fingerprints, DNA samples, voice recordings and other personal information from believers, according to ChinaAid. Several Christians released after questioning claimed officers accused those refusing to join government-sanctioned churches of belonging to a “cult.”

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM CONCERNS

China officially recognizes Protestant Christianity through the government-controlled Three-Self Patriotic Movement, but many believers worship in independent congregations known as house churches.

Under President Xi Jinping, the Communist Party has tightened oversight of religious activities, requiring religious organizations to comply with state regulations and policies promoting loyalty to the party.

China ranks 17th on the 2026 World Watch List of 50 countries where Christians face the most severe persecution, said its publisher, Open Doors.

The Christian advocacy organization estimates that about 96.7 million Christians live in China, representing 6.8 percent of its population.

CHINA DEFENDS RELIGIOUS POLICIES

Open Doors says authorities increasingly restrict religious activities involving minors, with children under 18 barred from attending government-registered churches and Christian families facing pressure over religious education.

The Chinese government denies wrongdoing. It says China’s constitution guarantees freedom of religious belief but that religious organizations must operate in accordance with national laws and regulations.

Beijing has defended its policies as necessary to maintain social stability and ensure that religious activities remain consistent with China’s political and legal system. There was no immediate publicly documented official response to the specific allegations involving schoolchildren in Yueyang.

However, ChinaAid founder and president Bob Fu condemned the interrogations, arguing that authorities were extending religious repression beyond church buildings into family and school life.

FAMILIES FACE PRESSURE

“This crackdown on faith has ultimately become a collective trampling of basic human dignity and childhood,” Fu warned.

Christian parents in Hunan have expressed growing fears about sending their children to school, while homeschooling remains difficult due to government restrictions and scrutiny, according to local believers.

Voice of the Martyrs Canada (VOMC), which highlighted the developments Thursday, urged Christians worldwide to pray for affected families, children and educators who have faced disciplinary measures because of their faith.

For Christian families in Yueyang, the announced interrogations have added a new dimension to the pressure on independent congregations, with even young children now facing questions from authorities about their Christian faith.
