(Worthy News) – Canada imposed tariffs of 15% to 50% on roughly $20 billion worth of American goods just after midnight Tuesday, September 8, escalating its trade dispute with President Donald Trump after negotiations broke down last month. The duties cover products ranging from steel and furniture to clothing and electronics.
Ottawa says the measures respond to Washington’s 50% tariffs on about C$27.6 billion in Canadian products, which took effect August 22. Canada’s customs agency confirmed that affected American imports now face duties of 15%, 25% or 50%, depending on the product.
The Trump administration maintains that its tariffs address discriminatory Canadian treatment of American automobiles, alcoholic beverages and dairy products. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described the action as an effort to secure fairer treatment for American exports.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, meanwhile, said Tuesday that his government would accelerate efforts to reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the United States, signaling that the dispute extends beyond the latest round of tariffs.
