(Worthy News) – British authorities charged two men Tuesday with national security offenses linked to a suspected Iranian intelligence operation targeting RAF Fairford, a strategically important U.S. bomber base in southwestern England, following a security scare that prompted Washington to withdraw its deployed B-1 bombers.
The suspects, Mohmed Ahmad Abdulkarim and Nouman Essghir, both 24 and from London, face charges under Britain’s National Security Act. Abdulkarim is accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service believed to be Iran’s, while Essghir is charged with entering a prohibited military site for purposes prejudicial to British national security.
The charges follow a September 27 incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, where armed police and military bomb-disposal specialists responded to suspicious vehicles outside the installation. Authorities evacuated nearby residents and discovered gasoline in several vans, although no explosives were found.
The investigation prompted the Pentagon to withdraw approximately a dozen B-1B Lancer bombers from the installation and return them to their home bases in the United States. RAF Fairford serves as a critical forward operating location for American heavy bombers and had been used to launch strikes against Iranian military targets.
British Intelligence Warns of Expanding Iranian Threat
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said the suspected operation was almost certainly directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), although Tehran denies involvement.
The case comes amid growing warnings from Britain’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, that Iranian operatives are expanding their activities against Western military installations and other targets.
MI5 Director General Ken McCallum recently warned that Iranian-linked threats have intensified, with more than 50 individuals arrested in connection with suspected Iranian operations in Britain over the past year.
British counterterrorism officials said the investigation remains active, with additional suspects released on bail as authorities examine the extent of possible Iranian state involvement.
The incident underscores growing concerns that the confrontation between Iran and the United States is extending beyond the Middle East, exposing American military facilities and allied nations to potential Iranian retaliation.
