Bali Bombing Survivors Demand Justice As Island Remembers 202 Victims (Worthy News In-Depth)

By Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent

KUTA, INDONESIA (Worthy News) – Survivors of the 2002 Bali bombings have renewed calls for justice as Indonesia commemorates the 24th anniversary of the Islamist terrorist attacks that killed 202 people, with an alleged organizer still awaiting trial more than two decades later.

Families, survivors and other mourners gathered Monday at the Bali Bombing Memorial in the resort town of Kuta, where prayers were offered and flowers laid to remember those killed on October 12, 2002, when militants targeted crowded nightlife venues frequented by foreign tourists.

The attacks killed people from more than 20 countries, including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians, devastating families and transforming Bali, a predominantly Hindu island in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.

Mourners could be seen paying tribute to the victims, some lighting candles, as their deaths remain a painful chapter in Indonesia’s history and its struggle against Islamist extremism.

Australian survivor Jan Laczynski, who lost five friends in the bombings, and Indonesian survivor Thiolina Marpaung have expressed frustration over the long-delayed prosecution of Encep Nurjaman, better known as Hambali, an alleged senior figure in the al-Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah militant network.

SURVIVORS SEEK JUSTICE

Hambali, who was captured in Thailand in 2003 and has been held at the U.S. military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, since 2006, faces charges connected to the Bali bombings and a separate 2003 attack on a Jakarta hotel.

Survivors have demanded greater transparency in the proceedings, including live broadcasts that would allow victims’ families to follow the case and better understand why justice has taken so long.

Their concerns were reportedly raised during a visit to the Kuta memorial by American military commission specialists ahead of the anniversary.

The October 2002 attacks began with an explosion at Paddy’s Pub, followed by a powerful car bomb outside the nearby Sari Club in Kuta’s bustling nightlife district. Another device exploded near the U.S. Consulate in nearby Denpasar, Bali’s provincial capital, without causing casualties.

“I was in bed and woke up from the blasts,” 29-year-old waitress Eka Puspita told Worthy News as a fan whirred nearby in the crowded Vietnamese café where she works. “I was only five years old, but I still remember it. The first blast was very strong. We pray that Bali will never experience this again.”

NIGHT OF TERROR

The coordinated assault, blamed on Jemaah Islamiyah, killed tourists, local residents and workers, while leaving more than 200 people injured. These attacks prompted an extensive international counterterrorism investigation and led Indonesia to strengthen its security operations.

Several militants were subsequently convicted, including three men executed by Indonesian authorities in 2008 for their roles in the bombings.

For Australia, which suffered the highest national death toll, the tragedy became one of the country’s darkest peacetime experiences, prompting years of remembrance ceremonies and assistance for survivors and bereaved families.

A new generation has grown up without personal memories of the attacks, but the memorial in Kuta remains a visible reminder of one of the darkest chapters in Bali’s history.

The memorial, with its intricately carved Balinese stonework, a large marble plaque bearing the victims’ names and nationalities, and a fountain symbolizing peace, stands along Kuta’s busy Legian Street, surrounded by shops, restaurants and nightlife venues.

BALI’S CHANGING NIGHTLIFE

Since the bombings, authorities have tightened oversight of nightlife, with sensual dancing increasingly confined to designated entertainment venues in tourist centers such as Kuta, according to local residents.

“Before the Bali bombings, some areas resembled Amsterdam at night. Now it’s still very vibrant, but religious police have become more active in enforcing the rules,” Victoria, a Christian, told Worthy News.

She was referring to Bali’s traditional security officers, known as Pecalang, whose responsibilities include enforcing local customs and maintaining order in communities where Hindu religious traditions remain deeply influential.

They work alongside regular police and other authorities, including in tourist areas. At shopping malls, trained security guards politely but firmly inspect bags and check personal belongings when necessary.

Guards also protect the entrances to major hotels, while near a nightclub, a soldier was observed carrying a semiautomatic rifle, underscoring the security precautions that remain in place more than two decades after the attacks.

PRAYERS FOR PEACE

Monday’s commemorations also included interfaith prayers and calls for tolerance, solidarity and peaceful coexistence across religious and national boundaries.

Officials in Badung, the district encompassing Kuta, said the anniversary was an opportunity to remember the victims while strengthening peace and unity among communities of different faiths.

The commemorations also recalled the October 2005 Bali bombings, which killed another 20 people, excluding the three suicide bombers, reinforcing the island’s determination to prevent further extremist violence.

Today, Bali continues to attract international visitors to its beaches, temples and entertainment districts, including visitors from Ukraine and Russia, two countries at war with each other, as well as from the conflict-ridden Middle East, Worthy News observed.

However, the memorial remains a reminder that the island’s reputation as a peaceful tropical paradise was shattered by violence.

As the 25th anniversary approaches in 2027, survivors and relatives hope for progress in the long-running legal proceedings against Hambali and some measure of closure to a tragedy that shook Bali and nations around the world.
